Program Files

Where in the file systems are the majority of programs files stored in linux. Is there a file that is equivilent to the Windows Program Files folder?

Most programs go in /usr/bin. And some things like Mozilla and OpenOffice install themselves in /usr/lib and /opt.

Don't only the actual executables go in /usr/bin. I'm talking about all of the stuff for the programs. Like the archives and the stuff that makes them run.

Ugh, that's alot of reading, I 'm thinking someone could give me a simple answer.

config files: /etc
libraries (dlls) that can be used by oither programs -> /usr/lib
all the other stuff -> /usr/share/<program>
icons and stuff often in /usr/share/icons or /usr/share/pixmaps
userdependent config files -> $HOME/.<program>

Alright thanks. So I guess since there is shared libraries and stuff, there can't really be a Program File's like directory for linux.

even so, Windows dumps files all over the place too. You get the Registry (relate to /etc) and Common Files (relate to /usr/lib), etc.
