I updated baselayout, hal, dbus (~x86 -> sys-apps/baselayout-1.11.5 ) and then did etc-config properly and suddenly dbus stopped working with this message:
Code:

neiges ~ # /etc/init.d/dbus start
 * Starting D-BUS system messagebus ...
Failed to start message bus: Attribute "at_console" is invalid on <policy> element in this context                [ !! ]

I went back to previous versions of those, unmerged/reemerged - but this problem stays.

Any help? Any info needed from me?

I found the problem. I had installed NetworkManager, and that required the CVS version of dbus. /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManagerInfo.conf - this file was the culprit.

Hi, stumbled upon the same problem..
Did you resolve it with NetworkManager working?

Another way to resolve this is to edit the NetworkManager config file in /etc/dbus-1/system.d and add your username instead of the at_console section (copying the "user root" entry from the config file).
