So, I'm following the Samba howto located at http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/quick-samba-howto.xml, using the example smb.conf file presented there in section 4, which is supposed to let clients just use the shares without a password, but when I locate my samba server on my windows machine, a dialog pops up asking for a password with the username field grayed out, saying 'SERVERHOSTNAME\Guest', and I get the following error message in my logs:

Code:

[2005/07/22 02:14:39, 1] auth/auth_util.c:make_server_info_sam(822)
User samba in passdb, but getpwnam() fails!

smbpaswd -a guest

Hey, thank you for the reply. I tried what you suggested (although without webadmin):

# smbpasswd -a guest
New SMB password:
Retype new SMB password:
Added user guest.

hitting only the Return key for the passwords. I even tried adding the 'Guest' and 'GUEST' users, but the log files keep giving the same error message as the one posted above. If you could post your /etc/samba/smb.conf file, I'd greatly appreciate it.
