I get this error periodically with XMMS. I have it on shuffle, and about 10-15 songs in, it'll complain on any random song with this error. I don't get it, I don't even use OSS, I use alsa. What's the deal?

Most likely, XMMS is configured to use the 'oss plugin'. If something else tries to pre-empt the sound output ( an error ding, etc ), then the oss plugin can no longer access the output. I don't know if this is your problem, but it is something to check out.

Worked here to.

I did all the normal checks on Alsa drivers/group permissions/ other stuff. Recompiled kernel. Recompiled xmms.

I find it very funny and embarassing  that xmms will allow you to change the sound driver in the user prefrences menu. I must have wasted 4+ hours chasing this problem down.

Maheriano, Your sig has sent chills up my spine. Thank you for the reminder to backup my junk.

haha, about my signature, I have an extra drive just for backups and on the day I was about to back everything up, I deleted it all. I got stomach sick and everything, I lost it all. That was 2 months ago and last night I was checking my backup drive to see what was on there and found a folder hidden in the cracks with all my backups on it, I actually did back it up! So I got it all back, I'm in such a good mood!

I've been beating my head trying to get audio working yet again. I recompiled the kernel with and without modules, with udev, without udev and XMMS still didn't work.

Then I read this message about having XMMS use a different output plugin!! OMG! I switched from OSS to ALSA and voila! It worked. Make sure you check this by using <control>-P and selecting the correct output plugin.

Thanks for getting this solved and for helping to solve it for me.
