|

Hi!
I need to buy a wireless adapter. I've though about one USB stick because I can use it in desktop and notebooks without buying an adapter.
I want at least 54Mbps and should support 802.1x security protocol, and I would prefer ones with the need of external firmware and have direct support in kernel (included in kernel.org sources).
I've searched a lot but I can't find the complete information, some sites don't talk about the firmware, others don't provide info about the security protocols used ... and there's nothing better than users opinion.
Thanks for attention! |

I recently managed to get a PCI wireless card working; I now need a USB one for a mobile system (and another for a laptop). I'm looking for an 802.11g (54MB/s) adapter that supports WPA.
Once I pieced together all the random bits of docs and HOWTOs floating around the net, it was pretty straightforward getting my PCI card working. But it's using madwifi, which AIUI currently doesn't support USB adapters.

The Netgear WG311 pci card works like a charm with the madwifi drivers. They also have USB ones, but I have not tried them. |

Careful with this one, some versions of this card have a TI ACX chipset on them. I couldn't get my one didn't work worth a **** on my AMD64 machine running 64bit gentoo.
I eventually replaced it with a Belkin card using Broadcoms chipset. Got it to work using ndiswrapper and the 64bit windows driver available for it. _________________ Help ! Help ! I'm being repressed |
