I grabbed the xorg.conf file from the wiki at :
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HARDWARE_Inspiron_8500

I ran startx and it stalled, gave me screen errors. There must be some other config file that I have to edit to get my nvidia card to go.

and here is my /var/log/xorg.0.log:

Knoppix log # cat Xorg.0.log

Hi,
This is my xorg.conf on my Inspiron 8500. You should verify which resolution your screen supports, as the WXGA has a resolution of 1680x1050, and i believe there were two other choices on the 8500, the higher of which was 1920x1200.

Code:

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier     "X.org Configured"
   Screen      0  "Screen0" 0 0

EndSection

Section "DRI"

EndSection

If you have the 1920x1200 screen, you dont need the explicit modeline i believe, this will do:
Code:
Modes    "1920x1200" "1600x1200" "1400x1050" "1280x1024" "1280x960" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

I hope that helps :) The above xorg.conf was all i needed to get X running on my inspiron.

It seems like it got a little farther. I am now using that file and I did a couple other things. It seems like I am now loading both the nvidia and nvidiafb modules. I also enabled both nvidia settings in the kernel configuration and recompiled. Any ideas here?

Perhaps there is something that I missed in the kernel configuration? what did you configure for nvidia, and after install, did you do anything besides

emerge nvidia-kernel nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia

If I recompiled the kernel with different options for nvidia, should I reinstall X?
??

Have you read the gentoo-linux documentation on xserver configuration and nVidia?

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia-guide.xml

I also don't suggest using knoppix to test and configure your X-server

If I just stole someone elses xorg.conf file, I dont see why would need to use the configuration program to remake it. I'm pretty sure that if this exact file worked with someone else that had the same configuration, it should work for me too, right?

And of course I am rebooting to test X. It would be silly to try to startX in knoppix, and I wouldnt get the same error.

Anyone have any other ideas? or please let me know if I have missed something.
