I have an 80Gb external, usb2.0 western digital harddrive, that I'd like to use with linux. Its currently formatted as FAT32, which I can read with no problems from linux. However, when trying to write to it, it truncates filenames to 8 characters. I even tried repartitioning it, and put a reiser partition on half of it, but it causes a kernel panic sometimes when writing to it, so I reformatted that partition as FAT. Does anyone know what the fix is for the 8 character file name thing, or does FAT just suck that much?

Make sure you use the vfat filesystem type in /etc/fstab, NOT msdos.

I had it set to 'auto', so maybe it was selecting msdos. I dunno. It seems to be working though. Thanks! |
