for me this is something trivial which should work out of the box:

I want to watch a video but mute the videos sound and listen instead to musik from a different application. this just doesnt work. if I mute the sound in gmplayer for example, than also the sound of rhythmbox is gone.
any chance to get this going?

in gmplayer you'll have to enable 'software mixing' in audio settings, then you should be able to turn down gmplayer's volume without affecting the pcm volume

in xine it's as simple as pressing + two times, that will switch to audio stream nr. 1 which is empty in most single language movies ;)

where is this setting? I couldn't find it. If I got to Preferences -> Audio I don't see this option.

ummm, here it's settings --> audio ---> enable software-mixer

this option doesn't exist in my gmplayer, only the three other ones. but this is still an gmplayer specific solution. how can I get any video/audio app to use some kind of internal mixer?

xine for example has no internal software mixer, but as said above: in xine you can simply switch the audio channel to an empty one with the '+-' keys...

vlc has softwaremixing by default afaik

strange.. what mplayer version are you using? here it's mplayer-1.0_pre7

i guess there is no 'general' solution for all players...
