Hello!

I have installed Gentoo Linux on my HP Pavilion ze1210 laptop. It has an AMD Athlon 1400+ processor with 256MB of ram.

It runs hot, but I heard somewhere that AMD processors run at a higher temp (Don't know if that is a fact).

I got my laptop to run A LOT cooler by enabling ACPI in my kernel.

Hope this helps :D

I have installed gentoo on a laptop with Mobile Athlon 1500+.
My CPU is hot, too as I guess from the fan running all the time. ACPI is the solution, but I can't get it running, boot fails when I enable it in the kernel.

Afraner:

That's odd. Maybe it is because you have APM enabled too? I am not sure, but in my kernel config, I have ACPI compiled in. While the fan, processor, and ac-adaptor things are compiled as modules

Have you tried asking about this before? I'm sure somebody more experienced may be able to help you better.

APM is not enabled.
I tried it the same way as you did, compile it in the kernel, but it did not boot because of an error I don't remember.
I'll search the forum, think I'll find a topic that can solve the problem.

Alisha:

ACPI stands for "Advanced Configuration & Power Interface", so by reading that, you could guess that it is an interface for power management on laptops. I think it also helps you use laptop only features like frequency scaling and battery monitoring. I don't know why it makes my laptop cooler, but it does. :D

Enable cpu frequency scaling (if your processor supports it) and it will get much cooler. You will need cpudyn also to do the job (it's in portage)

My laptop runs at 50C (530 Mhz) in idle and goes up to 85C (1800 Mhz) while compiling heavy stuff.

Are you prepared to use kernel 2.6 ? I use 2.6 on a HP compaq nx9005. I use both acpi and cpu scaling to manage power consumption/heat.

The problem i have now is im doing some devel work where i need to use qvfb which doesnt work in 2.6, it segfaults when i try to run apps.

I'm loading up qt-3.3.4 and qt-embedded 3.3.4, but as a default, the qvfb does not get built.

I had to do the following:

Code:
cd /usr/portage/x11-libs/qt-embedded
ebuild qt-embedded-3.3.4.ebuild compile

go into

Code:
cd /var/tmp/portage/qt-embedded-3.3.4/work/qt-embedded-free-3.3.4/tools/qvfb
make

I get alot of undefines for QWidgets class.

for athlons, always give athcool a try, which properly sets the HALT insturction on athlons-- on my machine, it cut idle temp by 20C.
