Alright, I have serious trouble with my monitor. It don't display anything at all anymore!

It all started when I tried to emerge the ati-drivers. I ran the console ATI-configuration program(or script perhaps, I am not sure). I was not sure about settings, to I chose low-prestanda. Now, I know that my monitor is protected from setting vsync and hsync out of range.

The result was: nothing. When I changed to XOrg, the screen switched to power saving mode, just as if the computer was not turned on at all! So, I switched back to console mode and turned off XOrg. Then I ran the configuration and tested many times (10+). Only once the screen remained on and then the result was horrifying (blur!).

After the testing I decided to fallback to my original XOrg graphics drivers (the backup xorg.conf), and I unmerged ati-drivers. I also set the opengl to XOrg. Still, XOrg didn't display anything and power saving mode showed up, so I decided to try the famous Windows[©] Reboot[©] trick (in Windows most troubles are solved with a reboot:wink: )

When my computer reboots, the screen activates power saving mode. The problem this time was, it never returned from power saving mode. And never has! Not even the booting is displayed. My first thought was: "the screen is broken". However, I sent it for reparations, and they said nothing were wrong with it:oops:
I have tried both connections, RGB and DVI, with still no result.

My old 17" CRT still work. But I wan't to use the new one...
If anybody know something that might help, please tell me!

Hardware:

Graphics Card: ATI-Radeon 9600XT-Ultimate Edition (UE = fanless cooling) 128 MB
Monitor: LG Flatron L1930BQ(SNHM-ALEUQ)

The LG is an LCD flat panel, you should have mentioned that. The only thing I can think of is you are specifying a vertical refresh rate that is too high for the LCD. Most LCDs can't run faster than 70 or 72 Hz. I looked this lcd up on amazon and the specs say it can go to 75Hz, however I don't know if that's for the highest resolution (1280x1024) or for lower resolutions.

What have you set the max refresh rate to? Is it more than 75? If so bump it down to 75, if you set it to 75, then try 70 just to see if you can get it to work.

The monitor also has DVI and VGA (analog) inputs, which one are you using? For the heck of it, try the other one. However, DVI is the best way to go for image quality.

Failing all that, post the monitor section of your xorg.conf file, I'm sure that's the culprit, we just have to figure it out.

With RGB connection I meant VGA input. So I have tried both inputs.

And when the refresh rates are too high, my monitor complains about that, it do not return to power saving. (Is the refresh rates even set when booting? I though the OS set them upon start...)

Oh, and I replaced my ATI configured xorg.conf with the original one, as I mentionen (fallback to xorg or somethin I said)...

if the fglrx driver is loading at boot, the other ati driver will not be able to access the card, so if you're using the old xorg, make sure fglrx is not loaded.

Please post your xorg.conf file. I have no idea what wrong and maybe more info will help.

This is my auto-generated xorg.conf. I have removed a lot of comments which were not needed for easy navigation. As I said, I tried to replace my ati-configured xorg with the original one, so the ati-configured one was lost.

I do not know much about fglrx, but I'm sure there is plenty of information on the Internet. I'll scan it and see what I can find. (Now, if you happen to know some about that, nobody would stop you from posting it here ;) )

Thank you for your patience, I'm just a stubborn rookie who should learn to obey the more cunning :)

Try changing your monitor rates. I pulled this off a google search:

Sync Range
Horizontal Frequency : 30 ~ 83 kHz
Vertical Frequency : 56 ~ 75 Hz

It may be that you are over constraining.

Also, since its an LCD, the best you can do is run it in its native resolution, thats 1280x1024, you don't even have that as an option in your config file.

I suggest you make it only work for 24 bit color 1280x1024 and see if X fires up...

Umm... I hope you are aware of what I wrote in the first post: "The screen is all dead, not even the boot displays."
The point is, it is completely dead. It never show anything on the screen, just the stupid power saving mode. No bios, no bootloader, no booting, no console, no XOrg, no Windows, nothing.

The reason my xorg was not very well configured was due to my change of screens, I made it work for my old CRT. (I know, quite stupid to change it when I want my new one to work...)

I totally missed that...

So you get no POST screen?

Dude, its not your gentoo, its your hardware.

They said there's nothing wrong with the monitor when you sent it in, right?

Then check the pins in the cable to make sure they haven't been bent, crumpled or something like that.

Try VGA, and if it doesn't work (and you can) try a different VGA cable.

Can you try the LCD on another system?

Alright, the monitor is up again :)

I installed some screen drivers for windows, and then tried the VGA input, as you said, Thanks a lot! :D
(I have no idea why the digital input do not work though... Bah, I'll find out in time.)

If I may have your opinion, which is the best way of installing ati-drivers in gentoo? Portage or automated installer?

I use the portage method. I haven't had too much trouble with that method. Every once in a while I'll find a kernel that doesn't like the ATI driver, or visa-versa but its rare.
