Simple Questions

Okay i have a few very simple questions. I have been trying to install gentoo for a few days now and i run into a couple problems.
First off wat is the code to get back to the root of the entire program? (like if im in cd /mnt/gentoo, or ive gone into a profile using chroot, how would i enter the original root that i boot into off the cd?) secondly how would i stop a program (such as mirrorselect or emerge) sometimes when i try to run mirrorselect it just freezes, and now after running mirrorselect i use CONFIG_PROTECT="-*" emerge baselayout and half of the mirrors i selected dont d/l so it goes through them all retrying 5 times and then on the last one succeeds (but it takes about an hour for each file to even start d/l) if you could tell me how to fix this i will be very happy thx

You can log out from the chroot as you log out from a shell. logout, exit but a I prefer Control-D
