Clock too fast

I've been having an issue where my clock will run too fast. Over the course of a day or two it will gain a few hours. I am unfamiliar with what settings I can tweak or even look at to troubleshoot this problem. How do I find out if its a hardware or a system clock issue? I'd like to not have to sync to ntp every hour in order to insure the clock is reasonably accurate. Any suggestions?
