sendmail

so, I have two servers, one a webserver and the other an email server, while logged onto the webserver I am using sendmail to email using my domains, but I noticed the mx records do not resolve locally, instead they get a public address, is there anyway to tell sendmail to resolve these particular records locally. I tried using /etc/hosts but no dice. Is this even possible??
