I have two Gentoo machines, an x86 laptop and an x86_64 desktop. Both use metalog and are running KDE 3.4/Gentoo 2005, and both have the following in rc.conf:

DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm"
XSESSION="kde-3.4"


For whatever reason KDM fires up right away on my laptop, but the desktop says "setting up kdm" and then takes me right to a terminal (no GUI). Then I have to log in and type "kdm" to get KDE going... Afer than everything is peachy. If I switch rc.conf to XDM it works fine on the x86_64 box too.

For the life of me I can't figure out what is wrong, nor can I find anything in any log files that indicates anything crashing or failing to load... Has anyone else run into this problem (maybe it has nothing to do with x86_64)? What on Earth could be causing it? Permissions? Something obvious I hope :). Where could I possibly look outside of /var/log/ to find debugging info?

Any advice would help :lol:

the best info would probably be in /var/log/Xorg.0.log What does that say?

Nothing is actually written to Xorg.0.log until I manually start kdm (after logging in), but here is what it says:

hmm... so kdm probably isn't getting executed for some reason. I wonder if it's path related...

What if you set:

DISPLAYMANAGER="/usr/kde/3.4/bin/kdm"

When I set DISPLAYMANAGER to "/usr/kde/3.4/bin/kdm" or "/usr/bin/kdm" (both of which exist and can be executed to manually start kdm) /etc/init.d/xdm just starts xdm as my display manager.

`which kdm` returns /usr/bin/kdm, is that correct?

... I just remembered that /usr/bin/kdm is a symlink back to /usr/kde/3.4/bin/kdm that I created a while back to make it easier to start kdm from the command line.

Ok that might be a clue... remove the /usr/bin/kdm sylink. Run env-update. Then try starting kdm. Do you have a /etc/env.d/*kde* file? It should place /usr/kde/3.4/bin in your path so you don't need that symlink.

Thanks! Fixing /etc/env.d/46kdepaths-3.4, removing /usr/bin/kdm, and running env-update fixed it!

I guess the file got munched way back when I was installing KDE or something... Anyway, thanks again.
