hi all.
i've got an nforce2 board with onboard 10/100 and gigabit cards. i found a couple posts on how to make them work, which i was thrilled about, but my problem is that they're for post/late install and i'm stuck right at the beginning, almost. i normally use a snapshot from a mirror, for convenience, but even if i used a cd for that i don't know how to emerge sync without active network.
this isn't exactly the problem, necessarily, as i've got a network card to spare, actually i took it out of a box that's not in use right now, hoping i could run the install using it and configure defaults for one of the onboards. however when i do a
Code:
net-setup eth2
ifconfig
all i see is the loopback. eth2 is a d-link rtl8139 that i know works because i installed gentoo on the box i borrowed it from.
any suggestions very much appreciated, and if you know of other issues with the chipset i'd be very greatful for early warning.
thanks!

Are you able to post the outputs from:

lspci
lsmod
ifconfig -a

Does it work from e.g k(g)noppix ? If so you might be best off booting that & installing from there, just mount -o bind /proc /mnt/{whatever}/proc & copy your resolv.conf too. Should work fine, always has for me.

hey, thanks for the replies.
therat:
lsmod and lspci are pretty long, the relevant lspci output is
Quote:
ethernet controller: nvidia corp nforce2 ethernet controller (rev a1)
ethernet controller: galileo technology ltd.: unknown device 4320 (rev 13)
ethernet controller: d-link system inc rtl8139 ethernet (rev10)

and from lsmod
Quote:
8139too
mii
eth1394
ieee1394

ifconfig -a shows 3 cards, 0 and 1 are unspec with long hardware addresses and eth2 is ethernet with a normal hwaddr but no ip after
Code:
net-setup eth2
, and lo which looks normal and sit0 with link encap: ipv6-in-ipv4

drwook:
the onboard cards, at least the 10/100 i didn't try the other, worked fine with knoppix, after that i'm a bit confused. i think i understand what you're suggesting but i don't understand what it will do that might make things work, could you please explain?

thanks!

If the cards work with knoppix, you can use the knoppix CD to install Gentoo..
Take a look here for instructions...
It is fairly similar to following the standard installation instructions, with a few small differences..

worked great, had one mishap right out of the gate with a rogue partition but after that it was smooth sailing.
after i finished the install i was still having troubles with the onboard ethernet but after reading https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-359750-highlight-nforce2+ethernet.html and doing a bit of playing i got things working, at least with respect to the network.
thanks everyone for all the help.
