Hi,

Sorry I am a noob ;p

I just installed Gentoo 1.4_rc2

All was fine :)

Emerge xfree
Emerged Nvidia-GLX & Kernel

all fine

Did XFree86 -configure

Returned no errors

nano -w XF86Config.new

Picked up My Nvidia Drivers & Card

Driver is nvidia :)

Tried with Just XFree86 it tries to start, screen flickers, no Nvidia Logo Screen is blank :(

Keyboard disabled can't ALT-CTRL-DEL

Have to reset mc :(

Read Nvidia Trouble Shooting

thought it might be AGP so put Option
NvAGP "0" under screen options

tried to startx again

nope just a blank screen

re-boot

modprobed nvidia yep it is there

checked XFree86Config file in /etc/X11/ mad sure GLcore not being loaded nope it isn't

commented out load dri

checked to see if load glx was there it is

checked my xfree.log file

no apparant errors but can't see where it is loading module glx anywhere

I am did not build nvidia FBdev in kernel

I did build agp support for my via chipset

Checked the sample config file against mine

My machine is

Abit KR7A Raid (raid disabled in bios)
Gainward GEFiorce 2 mx400 64mb Ram
512 MB Ram
40 & 15.3 GB ata 100 Maxtor hdd
1X Liteon CDRW
1x DVD

Gentoo Sources kernel 2.4.20-r1

Please can someone help me out here

BTW I am logged in as root, this is the only user I have set up at the moment.

Oh yeah and when I did modules-update, it did complain about a svga_helper.o module I did a depmod but it still appears there, weird really, because after I built kernel this error was not there

any help appreciated Please

Not sure what the problem is. It might help if you could show us your /etc/X11/XF86Config and /var/log/XFree86.0.log files.

hmmm this might be a tadge difficult

I am on another machine doing this winXP that cant talk to the other machine

should I be able to modprobe glx ?

load glx does not appear in my xfree log file any where

but it is set to Load glx in XF86Config File

I did the opengl-update nvidia bit as well it that went ok

I will try and save files to floppy and see if that works

Did your XFree86.0.log get truncated when you posted it or does it really end mid-line like that? There don't seem to be any problems up to this point that I can see. One thing is you might like to do though is specify your keyboard type, for example,
Code:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "keyboard"
        Option      "XkbRules" "xfree86"
        Option      "XkbModel" "pc104"
        Option      "XkbLayout" "us"
EndSection

but this can't be what's causing the problem.

Yes that is exactly how it is I do not know if it was truncated or not?

I just tried what you suggested and :( still locks up with blank screen keyboard is dead

I just re-emerged the nvidia drivers also

I can not find the glx module anywhere though.

definately no errors when emergeing nvidia drivers though

:(

maybe my video card isnt supported :(

Does it work if you replace Driver "nvidia" with Driver "nv" and comment out the Load "glx" line?

Hi Yes it does :)

The res is mangled really low & seems to be displaying 640x480
but it does work

I also had to take out the horiz and vert settings to get it to work

so this means I almost there right ?

I just unmerged nvidia-kernel & nvidia-glx

what might you suggest now ?

a re-emerge of nvidia drivers ?

or just live without gl stuff ?

I do admit to liking quake 3 and tuxracer though, but I suppose if I cant have it I will just have to live without it :(

what is this all about ???

I know these are the kernel modules I built from kernel, but why is all this overwritten my XF86Config file ????

When I built kernel I did
make mrproper
make dep && make clean bzImage modules modules_install
modules-update
back to bash prompt

can some one please let me know what is hapening here
this might explain why X just gives me a blank screen

TIA

Yeric,

If you took out the horiz/vert settings then that's why you're stuck with 640x480, the default settings don't allow anything else. You could try something more conservative than you had before, like say HorizSync 30-82, VertRefresh 50-120, and then set the 24-bit display section to say
Code:

SubSection "Display"
  Depth 24
  Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection

and if that works, try increasing the settings till you get what you want. Once everything's working fine with nv, you could try again with nvidia. Remerge nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel, uncomment the Load "glx" line, "modprobe NVdriver", then startx. If you still have problems, perhaps the following link might be helpful: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/nvidia_tsg.xml.

Your XF86Config file is overwritten--never seen that before :? . Are you sure you didn't perhaps redirect some output over the file by mistake?

About the steps you use to compile the kernel, "make mrproper" will delete your current kernel configuration settings if you don't save them somewhere else first. To use "make mrproper" you should be doing something like:
Code:

# cd /usr/src/linux
# cp .config /tmp
# make mrproper
# mv /tmp/.config .
# make menuconfig
# make dep

etc...

Ok just to make sure I didn't redirect I did it again this time just typing X at the prompt all ok with nv and got it up to 1280x1024 (19" monitor)

tried uncommenting glx and renaming to nvidia

again just X at the prompt

exactly the same problem

now my XF86Config files is wiped good job I made a backup first :)

I have never seen anything like this before either like you said in your post itis almost as if output is being directed to my XF86Config file ,but how ? and this is the kernel lib modules not the x config file

this just gets weirder and weirder

well I am shattered now, Off to try and get some sleep, will look at it again tomorrow refreshed

unfortunately I feel I am going to have to rebuild the whole lot agian aren't I :(

Believe me I have looked at this guide many times it has been well thumbed

I think this may be slightly dated though, as it refers to NVDriver rather than nvidia as it is now known also mentions building nvidia with make installs rather than good old emerge ;)

I am specifically interested in this one though
modprobe NVdriver NVreg_SkipBiosPost=1

I have not tried this yet

This will be a last hope attempt if this fails I do not know :(

I am questioning some thing else from the trouble shoot guide

crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 0 Jan 4 23:19 /dev/nvidia0
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 1 Jan 4 23:19 /dev/nvidia1
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 2 Jan 4 23:19 /dev/nvidia2
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 3 Jan 4 23:19 /dev/nvidia3
crw-rw---- 1 root video 195, 255 Jan 4 23:19 /dev/nvidiactl

the above does not exist in /dev not any where

why did this not get created when emerge happend ?

can I create this manually ?

Is this right should it be loading all these drivers ?

is this what it is doing ?

if so why ?

could this be the cause of my problems, again on examination of log file, it doesn't say anywhere that it is loading glx

doh why is life so difficult, I notice scanning the forum, that it may not just be a nvidia thing I saw someone called bloke2k having same problems with ati card

I built my gentoo from a stage 3 1.4_rc2 GRP CDROM then synced and then -u world

then emerged X
then kde
then nvidia

ok here's the deal.
I had exactly the same problems.
For me, it's related to using xfree 4.2.99.4
I went back to using 4.2.1-r2 and everything works.
here's the bug I filed:

AAAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!
You mean I have spent the best part of a week getting my gfx card to work and all the time it is a buggered XFree Doh!!

Yes reading you bug report, it is exactly the same as mine exactly!

out of interest what hardware are you running ?

How come there is no warning of this bug anywhere ?

Right I am going to have to download and merge the older Xfree tonight

I will give it a go

Thanks for explaining what my problem is

I new from reqading xfree docs and nvidia docs and Gentoo's own nvidia troubleshoot docs that I had done everything correctly

cheers

Hi

Yes I can confirm reverting to 4.2.1-r2 of XFree solves the problem

I would advise anyone experiencing any problems with x and using 4.2.99.4 to switch to older Xfree it works :)

I have Nvidia Logo up and x started

I am getting 668 fps on glx gears

This is on a gainward Ge-Force 2 mx400
does anyone know if this is half decent ?
