|
|
Ive read the http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted article but I dont quite undersand what to do about it.
I have the infamous no usable screens found error while installing Nvidia drivers, Ive tried serveral different versions of the nvidia kernel and glx.
I can load the drivers without a problem but I cant avoid the tanited error.
Is there a way to fix this? |

you dont need to untaint your module, tainted means that the module isnt open source so things may go wrong and may not be a way of fixing it as they dont have access to the code. _________________ a.k.a port001

what exactly causes the this error?, some people using the same module dont get this error while others do.
Using /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r10/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o
Warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4.19-gentoo-r10/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o will taint the kernel: non-GPL license - NVIDIA
See http://www.tux.org/lkml/#export-tainted for information about tainted modules
Module nvidia loaded, with warnings
does this mean my kernel is not compatible with nvidia.o |

no, it's fine. the other comment provided the answer, tainted means that it's closed and if something goes wrong the only people that can fix the error are those who provided it.
nVidia is the most common example, they provide binary drivers for their cards, so if there is some bug or flaw, the only people that can fix is are nVidia. |

its not an error, just a warning - the module loaded fine, do lsmod to see it. _________________ a.k.a port001
