replace drive in SW raid5

hello
i got a sw-raid5 with 6 drives, and one is very loud but has no data corruption. now i want to change this drive, but what's the right way to do that?
shutdown, replace drive, partition it, start raid?
or should i set the old drive "defunct" first?

I think you better mark it with defunct, shutdown, replace it, boot, anf add it to raid to reconstruct data.
