So I did my weekly
Code:
emerge sync
emerge -p world
emerge world

This morning, and nothing looked that suspicious (as I recall a kportage, php_mod, dc_gui, and one other upgrade)...however after the emerge and a restart....startx loaded KDE with a pretty nasty suprise, like....all the chars from like any font (with the exception of the control panel font) were replaced with the invalid char symbol...konsole loaded up completely filled with such chars....

This of course makes X-unusable...and I'm not sure what to unmerge and reemerge...

Anybody have any suggestions / guidance ?

Bob

I have a similar problem. I think the fault lies with the version of qt you have installed - mine is 3.1.0-r3, and some fonts are unreadable (sadly, all the ones used in my control panel, where I might be able to change the settings.) :(

However, other fonts are working fine. There is a currently masked version of qt - 3.1.1 - I'm going to try emerging that and see what happens.

Do you get only rectangles? If so, it's very, very easy to fix. For some reason emerging KDE 3.1 introduced this problem for me. I just checked, and all the fonts in question were only root-accessible. No rwx for anyone else. I simply chmod-ed all the fonts and there you go.

Ya...I have the rectangles...

I went in and started KDE under root, and it displayed fine...

what should the permissions on my fonts be ? Right now, I think that every group has read access...I'll try giving execute, and see if that works or not...

Yeah, once I realized root had all the characters, that clued me in, too. Kinda strange that emerging KDE3.1 would have this side-effect. Does it change the permissions on the fonts (unlikely), or just handle them differently? I don't know. I'm just glad it was something simple for once.

Well I went to every path in the font section of XFree86, and did a
Code:
chmod 777 *

Restarting X under a non root user yielded no different....root still displays fine (well, obviously)...what am I missing ?

Let's see...what else did I try first? I upgraded freetype...Search the forums here. I tried a bunch of stuff from the forum fist, but I still didn't get proper character display until I did chmod, so maybe it was a combination of things.

had a similar problem after upgrading to qt-3.1.0-r3. if you log in as the user who doesnt havew fonts and then open the control panel and then go to where the fonts selection is and try and select different fonts they whould all reappear in the selection boxes. you will have to reselect all fonts, i.e. in the control panel and in other konqueror dialogs for desktop, etc. I hope this is clear.

so you are saying that for each app, I need to go in and reselect the fonts...how annoying, I'll try in it in a minute.

I don't know if anybody cares, but just for anybody else who might have this problem one day. I did a bunch of re-emerging of stuff (qt, xft, kdelibs, font stuff (don't remember actual names)....and I checked after each emerge, but what made everything better was re-emerging xfree...

I have a similar problem, some fonts (xfree 75 and 100 dpi) appeared in screen like spaces.
To solve I enter with root privileges in [control panel- fonts instaled], disable and then enable 75 and 100 dpi font. Restarting applications solved the problem to any user
