Anyone out there using MAME? If so, have you found any decent community or forum sites? Most of the MAME sites I've found simply list ROMs (with no download links ) and offer some basic news. Ideally, I'd like to find a site either like this one or slashdot, but dedicated to MAME. (xmame would be even better, but I'm not holding my breath. )
If there isn't one, mebbe I'll create one.

At one point I thought the arcade@home forums were ok, but I think they've kinda turned into the newbie/rom requests type (as they all eventually do ) I'd love to see something like that, though. I need someone to tell me what's good to play out of my complete set so I can stop wasting my life on Burgertime. |

My MAME box currently is running RedHat 7.2. I did that caues the MAME .rpms were easy to find and I could not find .debs. I think I'll convert it to Gentoo now that I think I'm getting a handle on Gentoo.
MameWorld is a decent site and what I think you are looking for.
Mame.dk is good for rom information.
I see there is an ebuild for xmame. Does this also build xmess? If not do anyone know if there are any plans to create an ebuild that will install xmess? |

Obviously, a lot depends on what type of games you like. Here are my top 10 MAME games: (not in any particular order)
- Black Tiger (aka Black Dragon)
- Buster Brothers/Super Buster Brothers (aka Pang/Super Pang, I think)
- Bubble Bobble
- Sky Shark (aka something else, but I can't remember at the moment)
- Raiden (very similar to Sky Shark)
- Gunsmoke (I love this game)
- Ikari Warriors, though it's a bitch to play since it originally had a rotary joystick
- Commando (again, I love this game)
- Strider
- Rastan
Some other ones to check out are shinobi, time pilot (and time pilot 84), bagman, jailbreak, contra, heavy barrel and at least a dozen or so others that I'm sure I'm overlooking at the moment.
Also, I'm leaving off the Street Fighter games only because I find them exceedingly difficult to play with a mouse and keyboard. I might include them once this arrives. (hopefully by the end of the week!)

Ikari Warriors? I take it you've never played Metal Slug. If you like top scroll shmups no one makes 'em better than Cave/Atlus. Check out DonPachi, DoDonPachi, Gwange, and ESP Ra.De. |

Actually, I never had. Just tried it though and it looks like a great game. I still like Ikari Warriors, though.
Thanks for the pointers on those games -- I'll check them out.

Man, Metal Slug is hard. If I had to play it with actual quarters I'd be broke. My current playlist has included -
Burgertime
Tapper
Frogger
Marvel Vs. Capcom (couldn't resist being able to play a fighting game as Venom... even if it is hard to do)
Raiden (my old lady is a pro at this one )
Popeye (oh yeah, that game rules)
Man, I forgot about Gunsmoke. That game was great. There was also one I played a lot where you're a purple lunar rover or something and there's jumping and shooting... thanks for the suggestions. I've been able to get a full set and it's hard to know what on earth among all of those is worth playing.
I'd be curious to hear about your experiences with the x-arcade controllers... I've always wanted one but it's kinda pricey. |

I'll let you know as soon as it arrives and I've had a chance to play around with it.

As for xmess, it's in the source. the only way I know of right now to build xmess is by just extracting the tar.gz and then change the make file to target xmess on compile.
I don't know too much about the ebuild format but I don't think it would be to hard to make xmess to emerge as well, since it's coming from the same source. |

I tried to play some roms with xmame but I found it too slow.
I own a Dual pentium2 at 400 and on win the performance is good but on lin it's bad. I read the man page and I found that xmame could raster in different ways (X11, Glide, GL and DGA) but on my sytem (a gentoo linux with the DGA key included in USE variable) the only two executables are xmame and xmame.SDL. Why?!?!??
A very good place where to download roms is www.emuchina.net but is painfull to visit with mozzilla/netscape! |

Metal slug two is the most amazing game ever made, If only I could play it. Xmame won't compile on my system. I'm using gcc 3.1, has anybody else had this problem? |

If you look in the GCC 3 forum I think there is a thread on this. Or just search for "xmame" I think it is easy to find. |

ok ill take advantage of the nostalgic feeling here, and throw in a partly MAME related question:
Whats the best GUI for xmame?
Is there one included in Portage?
I have dl one called startxmame (great name), i think it is some kind of a script program, (it says TCL/TK on the box..) , but i dont know what to do with it. there is one file which is a shellscript, but when i try to execute it, i get the message
Couldn't find the program 'startxmame''
what is it that i dont understand?
btw:
. tutankham
. traverse USA / rally bike
. elevator action |

Grusibus is by far the best Xmame front end. Anyone know who makes a good Xmess front end? |

OK heres what i did to get VERY good mame performace.
First downloaded Nvidia's GLX module and kernel and then installed.
Next download the source for xmame (do not emerge).
Edit the Makefile so that it renders support for Opengl (xmame.xgl). you should see it listed as a display option ("display XGL").
Compile and load it up by typing 'xmame.xdl rom-name'
enjoy much better quality graphics and performace. (plus you can resize the window just by dragging the edges instead of a command line option) _________________ er.. |

It could be the 'ol rom directories. Either check the config to see what the default rom directory is and move them there, or add the --rompath (or whatever it is -- don't have it in front of me) switch to it to specify where the roms are at. At least that's what that usually indicates. |

Emerge grustibus is the solution to all your MAME configuration problems.
At least it was to me.
It is precisely what you need from a frontend, a visual overview of your games, and a visual overview of the different paths.
a good frontend! _________________ I wish I was two puppies.

I have XMame running well, but i'm having trouble with xmess.
When i try to start xmess, it doesn't accept any command line attributes and it seems to have trouble undrestanding anuthing from the xmessrc-file as well. Here's a clip:

Also I'm having trouble with finding bios-files, maybe roms too but I haven't been able to go that far.
I have a macplus.rom and macplus.zip-files, I have tried putting them in /usr/share/games/xmess/roms, /usr/share/games/xmess/bios and /usr/share/games/xmess/bios/macplus-direcotries, but xmess gives me:
Quote: | loading rom 0: macplus.rom

I think the binary might be corrupted, i'm re-emerging without the -O2 in make.conf. Let's see if that helps. |
