I am running Gentoo linux kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r4. My sound card is, according to lspci, "Creative Labs SB Live!". I have emerged alsa-utils, and ALSA support is compiled in the kernel.
I can't get any kind of output through my speakers. I did what http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml says I should do, no dice.
cat /proc/asound/cards says this:

Any idea what the problem might be?
I've checked that:
- My speakers are plugged in
- They are plugged into the correct socket-thingy
- My sound channels are not muted (alsamxixer, unmuted with M (shows an infinite sign instead of MM) and raised volume)
It used to work in Slackware Linux, and it worked also in my other OS, Windows XP.

Have you loaded the modules or is it compiled into the kernel? What is the output of this?
Can you play wav file with aplay? Have you unmuted all the channel as described in the guide? I am no expert though, so my advices may not be of assistanes.
What is the output of amixer?

ALSA is compiled straight into the kernel.
Aplay can play .wavs 
dmesg | grep Sound outputs nothing.

My sound has recently stopped working for no apparent reason. ALSA starts at boot with no errors, and my mixer settings are fine. The only time I get an error is if I try to stop ALSA:

Its just alerting you to the fact that your stoping a service that is set to start at boot time. Not an error really, more a kind of "you DO know what your doing, don't you?"

Note the !! after "Unloading ALSA modules", indicating it failed to stop it. That's the error. |

I have done what you suggested, but no luck !
But I must add that the last two commands gave me this :
