Hi, ALL,
I know I've seen this before, but as usual, when I nned it I couldn't find it...:)

I installed Gentoo, created the root password, but after reboot, I couldn't log in. It just says

"Login incorrect".

Now, I know I should boot from the LiveCD, mount filesystems and chroot. I should probably check for the /ect/nologon file, like somebody suggested for the "Please ignore this package" mesage. But I don't think it's the same.

Could you send me the proper way, please?

Thank you in advance.

did you set a root password after chrooting? and before booting into the new kernel? if not you'll have to reboot off the live cd and chroot again then set the admin password.

if you did set the root password tehn it's most likely you typoed it, could be you had caps lock on during install or changed the keyboard map form say us to uk so any symbols in the root password would move keys and confuse the sh*t out of you (speaking form experience)

Thank you for the reply, even.
I just realized, that I changed the keyboard to use the UNICODE, but I didn't put the "unicode" USE flag in /etc/make.conf. Is it possible it's the reason? And in this case I could just ad the "unicode" to the USE flags and recompile everything using "emerge --new-use world"? I didn't touch the keyboard layout though...

Thank you.

What may have happened is that the password ended up in /etc/shadow in cleartext instead as a hash of the password. You can check this by booting the livecd, mounting the root partition and take a look at that file. The easiest way to fix it is to clear the password. You can then login without a password. You should then ofcourse immediatly set a password again.

Thank you for the reply, nixnut.
How do I clear the password if this is the case? Just remove the file? Or kill the contents of the file leaving the file itself present?
Also, if I understood you correctly, after that I should boot into the installation, and the system won't ask me for the pasword, and I will be able to set one?

Is all that is correct?

Thank you.

OK.
Thank you all form looking into this. I am a complete idiot.
I had the Caps Lock turned on. So after I press shift and enter the password everything was fine.

I am going to mark this thread as solved.

Thank you.
