There are some dependencies with stuff you don't want. You may want to try something more lightweight than Gnome if emerging all night is not for you. |

basic like what ?
if its just simeple programs you need, just emerge them, like the mail client, evolution, nautilus ( file manager )
but that will still pull alot of packages - so sooner or later you will end up with the whole thing installed anyway.
You could just opt by installing a simple window manager and then install the programs you need.
or use something more simple like xfce. _________________ linux: #232767 |

if something doesnt compile - the emerge will stop, because usually other packages depend on the one that fails.
so you have to get it fixed before continuing. _________________ linux: #232767 |

I'm trying to do the opposite. I want to install everything that's with gnome. The problem is that only the gnome-basic is installed (emerge gnome). I want to install everything in the gnome-extra(s) directory. How do I go about that?
Thanks. |

create a file in the root directory called .xinitrc and write the following line:
exec gnome-session
That's it. After that startx and everything should be fine. |

thanks, now it is almost finished, but my HD space is not much left, i am sure it is enough to finish install, but after installation i think there are some portage files not used anymore, so i can rmove them to make more disk space. where is the portage saved? in distfiles directory or /var/tmp? |

Correction: not the root directory but your home directory. As for your other question, I'm not sure since I myself am a new user to Gentoo. Sorry about that. |

hi Ikaro, thanks a lot, because know less about gentoo, so many stupid questions to trouble u, but your answer is really helpful to me, and i feel gentoo forum is very very helpful to newers
finally i finished installing gnome, following your guide, i startx successfully, so happy, but some notices pop out, it says xscreensaver does not exist, does gnome portage not include screensaver or some problem during install? should i install it and how? And also a movie player does not work (named Tom...... forget), why? thanks. |

I want to install gnome and all the packages associated with it. How do I go about that? I already did emerge gnome but I got the basic package. How would I go about installing everything in the gnome-extra(s) directory? |
