there is my linux-pc(':D') which is working fine and a switch with my ibm 300pl which is not networking. i have tried debian/knoppix
Code:

No pppoe-access-concelerator

and serveral distributions more. now to gentoo: i have followed the handbook (that's most of my knowledge) and i can't get no networking.
bootpromt says:
Code:
Network device eth0 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP

also /sbin/ifconfig shows my card correctly. obviously gentoo already loaded correct driver.
but i can't "ping" .also asdl-start (after -setup) says:
Code:

...TIMED OUT!

Code:
dhcpcd eth0
isn't working, too.

Did you emerge pppoe? After installing pppoe you can jsut connect to the net like you would with a regular LAN connection.
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.eth0 start

no no, see, i use the installation forum because i am working with nothing but the documentation and there i am right at the start, my gentoo system is just the bootable cd, no chroot, and i can't emerge anything because of no network. i have just mentioned that debian problem (no pppoe access conselarator), too. i have the same problem (no network) working with different distributers.

have you tried "ifconfig eth0 down" and then "ifconfig eth0 up"? That could solve the problem. Then try to run dhcpcd again, but you don't need to specify eth0, just "dhcpcd" "ifconfig eth0 up" "ping google.com" etc

is your first linux-box getting is address from dhcp? if so shut it down and move the cable from it to the hp-box (from the computer side) and from the hp to it. then reboot the hp first and it next and see if the problem moves.

ok but did you boot the hp box 1st and the other box 2nd?
(I guess I should have ask is your modem a modem/dhcp-server combo ?)
I was tring to see if your isp only allows 1 ip address per line. and test the other parts of the hard ware at the same time.

it starting to look like a nic problem but you can do one more test to make sure
(I guess I should ask 1. is the switch and the cards (10/100)
and what type of card is the one that dose not work? a combo card one with AUI/BNC/TP?
if so you may need to force the card to use the tp port)

ok now the test
1 unplug your dsl modem from the switch, then
2 set your 2 boxs up with staic ip's on the same net work say 192.168.1.0/24
and see if you can ping each other.
and then we'll were we go.
