I recently built a new computer and switched my nvidia card out of my old computer and into my new one. I replaced the nvidia card with a rage 128 ultra.
After installing DRI and the various ati related utils and recompiling the kernel I figured I was ready to start up x.
If I run X as root, I have no trouble, but if I run X as a user then shortly after the window manager starts I loose access to all "pseudo-tty". I've tried adding totally new users to see if it might be some remanant files but with similar results.
The exact error is:
Code: | Setting default value
Failed to read: session.screen0.toolbar.tools

Failed to read: session.screen0.iconbar.mode

Failed to read: session.screen0.iconbar.deiconifyMode

I don't really know how to get more output than that since I haven't really figured out how to redirect output from startx (2>&1 > somelog.txt doesn't work, probably some type of stdio redirection in the script ?)
Anyhow, if anyone knows what might be causing this I would greatly appreciate the help. _________________ -SL

You want to look at :
Quote: | hi,
after move the "/dev"-folder (incl. permissions) from a running gentoo-system to my workstation => no success!
after untar the "/dev"-folder from stage3 (incl. permissions) to the workstation => no success!
so i thougt, that wrong permissons in the "/dev"-folder won't be the reason...
BUT, when i made a "chmod -R 777 /dev" (only to check, if the permissions in /dev really won't be the prob), the problem was SOLVED!
(okay, now i will leave the big smile on my face for this evening...
and search the ONE wrong permission later...)

I got the problem after upgrading to kde-3.4.1 for both my x86 and x86_64 systems. _________________ Tim: the Enchanter: There it is!

I found my problem. When migrating from pseudofs dev to ufs I had disabled devfs support.
I thought it was no longer needed, but it appears that it is. When I re-enabled devfs support my problems vanished. _________________ -SL
