Hardware: Compaq R4025 laptop with ATI MOBILITY RADEON Xpress 200 Series graphic card.
Kernel 2.6.12-r6
Emerged ati-drivers-8.13.4. Fglrx module was compiled and loaded just fine.
StartX KDE locked laptop with a black screen.
Editing xorg.conf with “NO_DRI” “yes” starts KDE, but obviously no DRI.
ati-drivers-8.13.3 worked on kernel 2.6.11 on a very same laptop.
Read through the thread, which described a similar problem with ati-drivers-8.14.13. Eventually it was fixed with ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2.ebuild.
DIFF ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2.ebuild and ati-drivers-8.13.4.ebuild trying to see if I can apply the same patches to fix the problem.
Unfortunately, main difference is fglrx-8.14.13-alt-2.6.12-agp.patch
Correct me if I am wrong, but this patch is specific for AGP cards.
What are the other options?
Downgrade to kernel –2.6.11?
Ideas?

Apparently the ATI drivers don't work with kernels greater than 2.6.11 or so. Some people have had some luck with changing the line "Option "UseInternalAGPGART"" from yes to no, orno to yes.

Do a search and you'll come up with a couple other threads that have better answers, and some links to other pages with patches and directions.

I never post before exhausting all possible sources (google, this forum, other forums, newsgroups, etc.).
If you have nothing to suggest except “you might come up with a couple other threads”, please, do not post at all.

I have the same problem since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.12-*

And there was another thread about that problem and some people mentioned applying patch to the kernel

But, I didn't do it. I'm just kinda waiting for new drivers to come out.

[Some ppl mentioned trying vanilla 2.6.13-* which i think is still beta, or you can always downgrade.]

From what I've seen, people are less than thrilled with 2.6.12. It seems it broke a lot of things that were fine in 11. Just downgrade for now, and the nitro patchset for 2.6.11 doesn't hurt either

I wouldn't run kernel 2.6.12 yet. To many little problems with it. I would go back to a working kernel version. The ATI drivers will work right away when you switch back.

As I mentioned before, I DIFF ati-drivers-8.14.13-r2.ebuild and ati-drivers-8.13.4.ebuild trying to see if I can apply the same patches to fix the problem.

The only main difference was a fglrx-8.14.13-alt-2.6.12-agp.patch. So I decided to give it a try. I copied ati-drivers-8.13.4.ebuild to my overlay directory, modified the file to include the patch and called it ati-drivers-8.13.4-r1, and ebuild the digest. Emerged ati-drivers-8.13.4-r1. Fglrx module was compiled and loaded just fine.
Startx KDE -> works. But it was a short-lived hope. Editing xorg.conf with “NO_DRI” “no” locked the laptop with a black screen.
O, well :(

Of coarse ATI drivers suck, at least the newest ones, causes problems with KDE both with a 32b and 64b builds of Gentoo. Gnome and all other desktops work perfect in either mode (32/64). Soon as you load KDE and use a menu or any thing like that it locks the computer. The same way in both builds, which leads me to believe it is the video driver, since other OSes, IE: Windows, Linspire, etc. have no problem. I have already made my decision, next video card I buy will not be an ATI.
