I Have an asus z81k laptop with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 and 1 gb of ram. So far I have tried everything I can to get xorg working. First, when I compiled my kernel with IOMMU, I could start xwindows, although fglrx couldn't stat AGP, but if I exited xwindows and then tried to start it again, my system would freeze: just a cursor in the upper left. I couldn't do anything with my pc in this state, but I could ssh into it. Then, I followed this guide: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-301437-postdays-0-postorder-asc-start-0.html but things didn't get any better. Instead of letting me get to a non-DRI xwindows once, my computer immediently went to what has been dubbed the "black screen of death". According to my X log, nothing has gone wrong, however I did notice some strange things while fooling around
1) lspci lists my card at a mobility 9600 M10, where it should be a 9700 M11... i'm not sure if this is a big deal or not
2)I can modprobe amd64-agp no problem, but whenever i lsmod, amd64-agp does not show up.
3)X windows gives no error when it starts (I started it from an SSH session so I could see what the output was).
I have even gone so far as to bring my system down from 1gb of ram, to 512 as escribed in this faq: http://odin.prohosting.com/wedge01/gentoo-radeon-faq.html.
I am really at a loss, please help

specs:
kernel 2.6.12-gentoo-r4
xorg 6.8.2-r2
ati-drivers 8.14.13-r1

Thanks!

Works fine here! 2.6.12-gentoo-r6 anyway.

His problem, I believe, is that you must DISABLE IOMMU and then explicitly ENABLE agpgart and the AMD 64 extensions to that. I have never been able to use ATI drivers with IOMMU enabled under any kernel release. If anyone has ATI Radeon drivers working with IOMMU, I would love to see the .config, Xorg.log files.

You must do a few things exactly right AND IN THE CORRECT ORDER to get ATI working:

1. From the Gentoo Radeon FAQ follow these kernel options:

# Loadable module support: ENABLED
# Loadable module support -> Module unloading: ENABLED
# Loadable module support -> Automatic kernel module loading: ENABLED
The above 3 options will generally be enabled in most kernels anyway, but since it wouldn't be possible to load any modules without them, they are required to use the ATI drivers.
# Bus options (PCI, PCMCIA, EISA, MCA, ISA) -> PCI Express support: ENABLED (only if you have a PCIe card)
# File systems -> Pseudo filesystems -> Virtual memory file system support: ENABLED
# Processor type and features -> MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support: ENABLED
MTRR support should always be enabled - if not, the driver may run very slowly, if it runs at all
# Device drivers -> Character Devices -> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support): ENABLED OR MODULE (if you don't compile this as a module, you'll have to set "UseInternalAGPGART" to "no" in your XF86Config file) [NOTE I ALWAYS USE THE MODULE]
This option enables AGP support in the kernel, which is usually a good thing to have :)
# Device drivers -> Character Devices -> (pick the correct AGP chipset option from the list, depending on your motherboard): ENABLED OR MODULE
Examples:
Motherboard: nVidia nForce2 based ---- NVIDIA nForce/nForce2 chipset support
Motherboard: VIA KT266/333/400 based ---- VIA chipset support
NB: the ATI AGP option is NOT normally required in systems with a standard AGP card. See Q2.3.
NB: compiling this option as a module is only possible in 2.6 kernels and is NOT RECOMMENDED!!!
# Device drivers -> Character Devices -> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support): DISABLED
This option is not required, and will almost certainly prevent the driver from working if enabled.
If you're using an AGP card, you should also select the Device drivers -> Character Devices -> AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support option. If you compile it as a module, it will be called "amd64-agp" and should be loaded before the fglrx module, along with the other kernel AGP modules

Add the correct modules to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6, which should include:
agpgart
amd64-agp
fglrx

IN THAT ORDER!!!!!!

2. Make sure your /usr/src/linux is pointing to the correct (latest) kernel that you have just configured. Recompile kernel and modules, install to /boot, and reboot.

3. Make sure you are using the latest "unstable" ati drivers:
emerge sync
echo "media-video/ati-drivers ~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
echo "media-video/ati-drivers-extra ~amd64" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
emerge -v ati-drivers ati-drivers-extra

Watch for any compile errors (not just warnings) that might lead you to a clue on any problems (it will error for example if kernel options are not set correctly, but will still seem to finish emerging even thought the compile failed!!!).

4. opengl-update ati

5. Run fglrxconfig - ANSWER YES to the question of whether to use internal AGP - THIS IS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE FOR 2.6.12+ kernels which seem to be broken for the kernel agp driver and radeon; you can try "no" but it probably will hard lock your system. "No" is preferred, however, so if it works do it, otherwise answer YES.

6. Edit and double check the auto generated xorg.conf file, double check everything and install it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Try it out it should work if not, post the output from /var/log/Xorg.0.log

What is IOMMU and how do I disable it?

I looked for it in the .config and have not found anything like that...

2.6.12-gentoo-r6 / ATI Radeon 9600XT / AMD64 3200+ / Asus A8V Deluxe
--> I can't get the ATI driver to work! I can startx with "NoDRI" "yes".. but that's not exactly what I want!.. I followed the above instructions, still my machine freezes trying to load the X server with "NoDRI" "no" in my xorg.conf.
I therefore tried to use an older kernel (2.6.10-gentoo-r6) and the ATI driver works!.. now I got another problem though: my Marvell Yukon ethernet adapter doesn't work with the driver in that kernel..
I would rather use a newer kernel!!!.. Could there be any other issue?..

-->to pranyi:
IOMMU is a feature you can find in the kernel config under "Processor type and features"... just disable it..

thanks in advance!

Hmm I have 3 kernels 2.6.10,11,12 and I don't see any IOMMU in that section.

Well then the feature might not be available for you at all for any reason, this won't be the problem therefore anyway (... seems strange though that you don't have this feature in your kernel...).
I found out that if I use the vanilla kernel (2.6.11.11), the ati driver loads and seems to work, needed another network card though, since in that kernel there is still only the old driver for my Marvell card available. dri seems to work as well, yet another problem shows up:
The only memory detectet are 128mb of 64-bit SDR Ram....
My card has 256mb of 128-bit DDR Ram on it...
Code:
(--) fglrx(0): VideoRAM: 131072 kByte (64-bit SDR SDRAM)

Does anybody know, how to get my entire and fast ram on my card working????
thanks in advance!!!!

pranyi - you must have the IOMMU option if you have selected Athlon 64/Opteron processor type - double check your processor type selection.

fidel - Are you sure that you disabled DRM in the kernel options, and did you watch the compile from emerge ati-drivers to make sure DRI compiles? What does your X.log.0 look like? There is an option to set video memory but I would wait to get it working first.

I did disable the direct rendering in the kernel, the ati-drivers get compiled without any complaint. There is an entry in my Xorg.0.log, that says:
Code:
(WW) fglrx: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found

Could that lead to the problems?...
I tried to specify the amount of Video Ram in my xorg.conf like
Code:
VideoRam 256

but that doesn't do anything...

well...

I don't know if that's the case for everyone, because I've been using ATI driver with IOMMU enabled.

And it has been working fine until I upgraded to 2.6.12 kernel.

I think there has been a lot of dicussion about this in another ATI thread, and I saw many people using ATI drivers with IOMMU enabled.

If you do have it working, I would like to see the X logs and your .config if you do not mind sharing.

As I mentioned, current acceleration is not working currently, after upgrading to 2.6.12-~ kernel...
I can of course downgrade to 2.6.11, but I'd rather wait till solution comes out for 12 kernels, because I don't really make use of acceleration anyways.

This is my xorg.conf...

And regarding the xorg log, it has some warnings about acceleration stuff. [again that happened after upgrading my kernel]

Maybe this should be added to the "ATI Radeon FAQ".
I was trying to follow the steps in the FAQ and could not set agpgart support in menuconfig.
There was no option, no way to choose my chipset either,
until I read this post and disabled IOMMU.

Enabling IOMMU automagically enables AGPGART. That is why it is not in the Radeon FAQ though maybe a note that that is what is going on would be a good idea. In theory if you enable IOMMU you shoudl be okay ... but:

What I believe is more problematic is that, in my experience anyway, enabling IOMMU with ATI drivers always causes serious problems with 3D acceleration. Sometimes it just doesn't work, sometimes it appears to work but when you look at the logs you find DRI is actually crashing or you get random lockups. That is why I always ask for logs vs. just a claim that "it works". I have tested it extensively under 2.6.11 with Radeon 9550 and never found a way to make it work reliably with IOMMU turned on. Maybe other ATI chipsets are different or maybe this is a problem limited to the Nforce chipsets, I do not know for sure.

[cut]

And regarding the xorg log, it has some warnings about acceleration stuff. [again that happened after upgrading my kernel]

What I would like to see if you can show it is not the xorg.conf file but the logs and kernel configs:

/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/usr/src/linux/.config

in each case where you have actually gotten the ati drivers to work under a 2.6.11 kernel. I know that 2D can be made to work, but what I want to see is if it is ever possible to get 3D/DRI working without errors with the ati drivers, a 64 bit 2.6 kernel, and IOMMU enabled. The only way to confirm this is through examining the logs and kernel options. That will also give me info about your chipset.

Also, I would be curious what fgrlx_gears gives you when you had it working under the IOMMU.
