Our Windows XP clients have been having problems with DHCP on our network. They frequently are unable to get DHCP leases. We suspect network interference may be caused by a possibly misconfigured Gentoo box, because it is the new kid on the network, and because two seconds after its network cable is unplugged, the Windows XP clients can obtain IP addresses by running,
Code:
ipconfig /renew

The owner of the Gentoo box is away from the office for at least a few more weeks. However, we have been given permission to access the system. The server is configured to run DHCP in /etc/conf.d/net. When I run,
Code:
ps aux

I see that dhcpcd is running. When I run,
Code:
rc-update show

I don't see any entries for dhcpcd nor for dhcpd (Good, because the Gentoo box should not be running a DHCP server). There is an entry for starting the netmount service. I'm unfamiliar with this service. Would it be expected that netmount should be started at boot? The purpose of the server is to run apache and php to function as a standalone web photo-album.

katsiki,

Does your DHCP server have a large enough range of IP addresses for all the PCs you are trying to serve?
Gentoo should not make a mess of things but keeping adding PCs means you will eventually run out of IPs that your DHCP server is permitted to allocate.

When that happens, someone is going to be disappointed, they will apply for an IP and be turned down.

those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.
