If I want to boot my laptop from a bootable CD, i have to change the boot settings in the BIOS, so it would be more convenient to have an entry in grub to boot from /dev/hdc. Is this possible?

Not really an answer to your question, but wouldn't it be more convenient to just alter your BIOS to use the CD-Rom device as the first boot device and the Harddisk as the second boot device?
That way you can boot from a CD when you've inserted one, and boot from the HD when there's no bootable CD in your CD-rom drive. _________________ Athlon-XP 2000 @ 2083MHz

The problem is, if the cd-drive is the first boot device, and a cd or dvd is left in the drive, the BIOS "hangs" at bootup while searching for a boot record, which is pretty annoying, especially with cdr's, because it takes forever.
So I thought, I just leave the harddisk as the first boot device, and if I want to boot from a CD, I just use grub. |

Big Advantage a la yaboot !?
There would be a great advantage in such functionality in grub.
1. There is a great delay in searching for boot-records on cd/dvd-rom's on many BIOS' so if you forgot a disk your pretty f***ed !
2. Every entry in grub is passwort protectable wich your MB is not (not really at all after introducing Master-Passwords) !
So i have been hit by these two reasons several times and was really p***ed. |

Yaboot's functionality comes from the way the MAC's BIOS handles bootable CDs.
Likewise, GRUB's functionality (or lack thereof) comes from the way the PC's BIOS handles bootable CDs. |

I did not with any word say that there is a problem in grub. I use grub and it works very fine.
I only thought that there would be a great step ahead if the grub programmers would find a way to compensate what PC-BIOS lacks !?
It was only meant as some kind of inspiration

Yeah, sorry folks, it was late, my back's playing up, I was sick of seeing the same things coming up in posts all the time...
I was just pissed off with the world in general, not anyone in particular. |
