The well-known beta-repository BreakMyGentoo has changed its maintainer and is finally reopened and active again. Let's take a look to the announcement:

Quote:
Over the last few months BreakMyGentoo was more or less inactive. The then-maintainer has not enough time to provide things and so he decided to give up. I decided to take over the project to lead it back to the shining sun. So here we are.

During the last days I was creating a complete new webpage and set up a new SVN-repository. The show-stopper is the planet, completely written from scratch, to have a clean and useful codebase. The complete page is Smarty-based and thus highly customable.

In the next days I will provide a RSS-feed for the planet.
Contributors of ebuilds are always welcome, developer applications are also wanted. If you have time and feel fit to create ebuilds for unstable software, don't be too shy to apply becoming BreakMyGentoo-developer.

Our focus will be providing a various serie of unstable applications, currently nautilus-sendto-0.4, gimp-2.3.2, gtk-engines-clearlooks-0.6.2 are in there. If you want to use this ebuilds, visit our About-page and follow the instructions. In the tradition of BMG, we'll focus on GNOME. But nevertheless, nobody should be kept from commiting KDE-stuff or something like this.

I hope we have fun over the next month. Let's make Gentoo inovative again. If you will excuse, there are a lot of things to make better than it is, Gentoo's current way is not the best, especially if you focus the GNOME-herd. We want to try to help out a bit making the whole project better.

So, if you think this sounds interesting, feel free to try it out, submit ebuilds, proposals, bugreports, etc.

Browse the repository: https://svn.breakmygentoo.net/bmg-main/
Take a look at the website: http://breakmygentoo.net/

I don't able to make overlay work...

I got the svn

Code:
viking bmg_overlay # ls /data/breakmygentoo/bmg_overlay/
app-accessibility  app-office  gnome-extra  net-analyzer    sys-apps    x11-wm
app-admin          app-text    mail-client  net-misc        www-client
app-arch           dev-dotnet  media-gfx    net-wireless    x11-libs
app-crypt          dev-libs    media-sound  profiles        x11-misc
app-editors        dev-python  media-tv     skel.ChangeLog  x11-terms
app-misc           gnome-base  media-video  skel.ebuild     x11-themes
viking bmg_overlay #

I modified my make.conf
Code:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/data/breakmygentoo/bmg_overlay"
#PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/data/breakmygentoo/steev_overlay"

but when I emerge gnome, the bmg_overlay d'ont work,,,
Code:
viking bmg_overlay # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -p

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] media-fonts/gnu-gs-fonts-std-8.11
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/ghostscript-7.07.1-r9
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/ggv-2.8.5
[ebuild  N    ] app-text/gpdf-2.10.0

[ebuild  N    ] gnome-extra/bug-buddy-2.10.0
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-base/gnome-2.10.2
viking bmg_overlay #

But if I change the overlay in make.conf to steev one, it's ok
Code:
viking bmg_overlay # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gnome -p

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] gnome-extra/bug-buddy-2.11.1

If the steev overlay is from steev at steev.net for gnome. Stay with that frankly. Nothing against the BMG gnome overlay but they do some linking against steev's tree and unless it changed use -sandbox to install gnome.

The gnome ebuilds from the bmg overlay are -* masked, so you would have to either modify all the ebuilds or add every gnome package to /etc/portage/package.keywords (with -* after each package of course).

First of all: Great work on reviving BMG!

Do you plan to provide a rsync-mirror again. There was one under rsync://rsync.breakmygentoo.net/.

I am also glad that BGM is back again, keep on with your good work!!!!

Today a gnome-2.11.91_pre0 meta-ebuild was introduced in official portage. It's more or less empty at the moment, however it seems that the Gentoo devs decided to include GNOME-development versions (at least semi)-officially into Gentoo.

Yeah, I'm happy to see BMG alive again! Looking forward to your work! Having everything on a CVS base is a bit too much work :-)

That's might be because you have the nowebdav USE flag for subversion...

My understanding is that much of what was in love-sources is now either in the official kernel tree, or in ck-sources anyway. Thus, love-sources will remain dead (I presume).

well love-sources was originally a testing ground for gentoo-dev-sources (when gentoo-sources was 2.4) and comprised of mostly -mm, now the testing ground seems to be -mm mostly.

Who wants to help me with coke-sources?

Holy @#$% man I've NEVER seen such rediculous CFLAGS. Gawd damn man, at some point you gotta just let go of the insanity and buy a better CPU.

Well, look around, dude! That's a fine CPU and there's nothing wrong with those flags. AMD actually recommends something along those lines.

thats ok, perhaps he could learn about compiler flags though? -mtune is invoked by -march anyway and you cannot compile only for just one i386 arch and then tell it to be allowed to be used on other i386 archs    we have align functions and other aligning subroutines which will make all the HUGE code generated by accumulate-outgoing-args just flounder in speed with -mno-push-args

All he's doing is adding extra flags in, creating bigger code and making it run slower. Maybe he should read this page

I don't do it myself, but some people put -mtune in there as a fallback in case the ebuild strips the -march flag. Makes sense that way.

And I thought it was -falign-functions=64 that makes optimal use of the cache size of the AthXP, and -maccumulate-outgoing-args is definitely recommended by AMD for this CPU. But I'll admit I'm no expert on this myself, so I don't know the details of how this works (always open to be enlightened though), but I've seen people who do know recommend these flags.

Also, these are stable flags, it's not an example of ricer flags at all. I mean -O2 is very sensible, it's not like there's anything in there that shouts -fyes-i-dont-fokking-care-if-its-unstable-as-long-as-i-get-my-0.5%-speed-increase

the only differenc between the two is the ability to use the code on other i386 arches. if -march is stripped (or should be) then -mtune will be also.

I thought it was -falign-functions=32 but that maybe safe options rather than optimal. Also, aligning functions makes very large code and accumulate-outgoing-args will envoke -mno-push-args and just make the bigger code run slower

they are stable flags just done wrongly thats all. It seems as if someone has said "here try these..." without even knowing what they do.

Then why does AMD recommend that? Doesn't make sense to me.

i dunno, maybe because bigger, slower code is easier to debug?
