Hello,

I've a big problem... 2~4 September we have an BIG LAN party and our servers aren’t UP! I have experience with RH9.0 but i am not an high end linux user... i don’t think i have the knowledge to compile a driver my self :(

Now we are installing Gentoo 2005.o and there is no support for Promise SX4000 PATA Hardware raid controller.... only the SATA version is in the KERNEL... almost same chipset but wont work with the PATA pci card.

Specs:
3Ghz HT - (supported)
ASUS p4c 800 Deluxe E - (supported)
4x Maxtor 200GB - (supported)
1x SX4000 PCI (Promise) - (NOT supported)
1x 3com 10/100 - (supported)

Software:
Driver Disk with RH9.0 driver based on 2.4.xxx kernel
Gentoo install minimal CD based on 2.6.13 kernel

I don’t want to bother you all, but is there anybody who could please help me... please don’t say google or check IRC... i spend weeks of googleing & IRC chat :( nobody could deliver me a driver or an how-to use in Gentoo :(

I could only say it one more time "Pleeeeeaaaaze!!!!" (Maybe someone could compile a driver for me, or knows how-to integrate the module.ko in the ISO)

P.S
Please notice that: The driver in kernel is an SATA version (not the PATA)
Please notice that: This link: "http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/base/amd64/technotes/index.xml?part=1&chap=2&style=printable" Says it must be supported....?
I know there are lots of other topics but there is or no solution or there is an older kernel in use....

If you could help or @ lease try to, im am very grade full

Hey there... I SX4000 is pata mode and by linux standards from what i've read either is or is nearly a depreciated device. May i suggest linuxraid in a raid5 configuration using linuxraid autodetect partitons possibly with lvm2 since 2.6 linux kernel mode software raid and lvm2 both use similar kernel drivers. Top this off with reiserfs and this would be one very agile setup! pata mode devices were depreciated in favor of sata since the scsi layer of the linux kernel is where servers really do business. Around the time 2.6 was released pata and sata both crossed 2.6's release with sata being generally favored. So is the way of technology. Some items just go the way of the dinosaur. Not even promise has vendor support for this card which is a harsh reality due to linux and unix dominating the server market. Linuxraid would be a wise substitute or permanent solution until you can either buy a 3ware 7006-4 which is better supported in current kernels or just use dm raid. It's very stable. No complaints here
