ok, i wish to calculate what's my power consumption to:

-find if i need another power supply (or a more powerful)
(i've got a 400W antec mini-server tour)

- estimate how long my 700VA UPS would last

here's the hardware:

a7n8x motherboard
9 160Gb drives (8 of them in a raid5)
1 combo dvdrom/cdrw
4 little fans
1 pci prismII wireless card (i'd wish to know exactly
how much power this could take)
1 pci emu10k1 soundcard
1 hpt74 highpoint raid card (4 controllers)
2 silicon image raid card (2 controllers each)
the usb ports (4) are used only occasionnally, as the dvdrom drive
(apart for the usb UPS monitoring)
but let's calculate the max power consumption

i recently upgraded to 9 drives (from 7) and now experimenting
lockups (especially when compiling or backuping from one
to another drive). I even suspect a bad block
problem to be caused by my complaining power
supply. Could you give me good
estimations of the power used by each piece of hardware?

With that setup, you'd most likely have already noticed if that was the case. Or does it get very hot? Besides, saying that this is a 400W power supply doesn't say much. There are 230W supplys which are more powerful than 400W ones. It's much more interesting how they distribute the power on the different lines (12V/5V/...) and how this matches your requirements.

Really hard to estimate, really easy to just try out.

What are you experimenting with? Don't torture your hardware too much, it won't thank you.

Err... no. Check with the manufacturers - they usually provide a good estimate in their technical specifications. Or you could just plug a measuring device into the whole thing, which is probably faster (you can probably rent one from your energy provider).

There is a power supply calculator on this site.
