How do you install packages from the package cd? I search google and search the forum and not many people seem to talk about it.
I just download the "install-amd64-minimal-2005.1.iso" through bit torrent, now I'm downloading stage3 through bit torrent, and the package cd also.
Normally I prefer doing my gentoo installs from stage1 and compiling every single package, but this time, I just want it to be done as quick as possible. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

Thanks. I was about to ask the same thing ^_^
I entered:
emerge --usepkg x11-base
And it went to a new, blank line and nothing seems to be happening. Any ideas? |

x11-base is a category, not a program. To install the X server, you want "xorg-x11".
You can, of course, use fully qualified names such as "x11-base/xorg-x11". |

Thanks!
I'm letting it run right now, and I've got this so far:
!!! Invalid binary package: xfwm4-themes-4.2.0.tbz2
!!! Invalid binary package: xorg-x11-6.8.2-r1.tbz2
!!! Invalid binary package: yacc-1.9.1-r2.tbz2
There was another one but it started to install the rest. Is this a problem? I'm guessing the second one would be quite a big one, as that looks like what i want to install |

ok one more question, can I use the package cd for really big packages, for instance, I want it to emerge xorg-x11 and gnome, and that's basically it, maybe a few other big packages, then what do i do to get portage to stop looking at the cd, is it just emerge sync, or do I have to update make.conf and remove the cd-rom directory, because I want all the latest packages compiled after getting through xorg-x11 and gnome. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net

The portage tree is used by default given any emerge command. Without the '--usepkg' or '--usepkgonly' flags, binaries will always be built from source.
emerge --sync
emerge --update --deep world
Should be sufficient to upgrade any system packages. If you want to rebuild everything (including glibc) at some point, use the '--emptytree' parameter. It's unnecessary to do that, however, unless you demand customized binaries using your CFLAGS and USE flags immediately. Using the former method, packages will slowly adapt to the custom flags as each ebuild receives a version bump. |

ok thanks, I will definitely do that as soon as they finish adding 2005.1 to the mirrors instead of bit torrent, thanks for your help. _________________ IRC!: #zen-sources on irc.rizon.net
