Hi,

I have been looking for a good msn client, I used gaim for a while but found that it has problems with sound and was getting annoying. So I moved on to amsn, but I am experiencing two problems:

1) When I try to create a profile it just hangs with no output to the console.

2) It seems to randomly open empty chat windows which is really annoying.

Has anyone experienced either of these and could help me out?

Thanks!
Evan

Hello,

I have been use aMSN, but I didn't like it. So I change to Kopete which is far more advanced.
You can have more MSN account and you see all your contact at the same time.
You should try it out and see if it is better for you.

Try upgrading to the CVS version - did wonders for me.

For your second point: The opening of empty chat windows is not at all randomly, empty chat windows are opened when someone connects to you, e.g. when someone clicks your name in the contact list window.

Actually, there will be a new release very soon, first a bugfix release (0.94.1), for a bug which causes problems for people that run aMSN 0.94.

Soon thereafter, there will be a grand new release: 0.95, with tons of new options AND an improved look (themable buttons and scrollbars, not the standard tk ones). I would suggest everyone to try the cvs version:

First: download the latest cvs snapshot (on the right of http://amsn.sf.net's main page).
Second: untar and run ./configure && make, which is required to compile the new imaging backend..
Third: run ./amsn and enjoy!

And finally, you can use a beta-version of tcl/tk to get anti-aliased fonts in aMSN (and that's an important improvement for the look too).
A mini howto is posted in another thread on this forum.

I know the empty windows mean someone click on me and start a chat. But I checked with my friend when a window opened and he said he didn't click on me...
Maybe there is bug or something.

Looks like the cvs version works. I can't wait for that release!

With the cvs-version I don't get windows opening without someone typing a message anymore. I think with 0.94 the problem is that a new
window is opened when someone requests your display picture. Which is very often nowadays..

i was an avid kopete user until yesterday when I tried amsn from CVS. its definitely awesome. its come a long way since last time I used it.
the AA Fonts are great. MSN Webcam support is working perfectly too!! ... AND another great feature I've only ever seen in gaim... they now have 'alarms' which are the equivalent to gaim's buddy pounce. very cool....

hmm, I am now using the cvs version but I can't seem to make a profile. It crashes on me and then it won't let me start it up again. Is there a sample profiles file somewhere that I could use and put my values in manually?

Try moving your .amsn library - worked for me.
If that doesn't help, do
Code:
emerge -1 tcl tk

Do you mean getting rid of my .amsn directory in my home directory, or moving it to another location?

Which ever - the important thing is that it is no longer found at ~/.amsn

That lets me start it up, but I still can't create a profile or else the same problem occurs.

Then try to recompile tcl and tk - and do the same to amsn while you're at it.

Hey,

Indeed, the randomly opened windows aren't random. I think the aMSN client is just a little bit poorly written in this aspect. MSN does not only connect to clients when a chat window is opened, but also at other times to get information, like the display picture. I think aMSN is just written so it opens a window on any connect. Though I'm not sure.

I used aMSN a lot, also on Windows, until I got a webcam. The only client on Linux I know atm is Mercury, but I don't like the rest of it? Did anyone say the next version of aMSN is going to have webcam support? Any more info on this? :-) ANd what about ETA's of next version?

Greetings

I'll do this when I get home, which is not for another 8 hours :( .

That might have been the case in <=0.94 - but in 0.95 this no longer happens (at least not on any connect).

You can download the CVS version 0.95b by doing the following:
Code:
touch .cvspass
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/amsn login
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/amsn co -P msn

When asked to enter password - simply press enter.
amsn will be placed in a subfolder (of the current directory) named msn.
When downloaded all you need to do is:
Code:
cd msn
./configure
make

then you can run it by calling
Code:
amsn

The beta has webcam support and I've heard that it works.
I don't know when it will be a non-beta release.
