[Solved] iwlist ath0 scan invalid argument

for some reason when i write iwconfig it recognizes my ath0 card (madwifi) but it can't connect to any network and writing iwlist ath0 scan returns "ath0 interface dosn't support scanning : invalid argument". I have no idea what i have made wrong any ideas?

PS Please say if you need to know what is in any of my config files and i'll post it.

You need to "ifconfig ath0 up" before you can scan.
