Kernel panic !!!!!

Hi

I run VMware ESX Server on DELL blade server with scsi & raid controler DELL PERC controler.

I added a virtual machine, I installed a guest system linux gentoo 2005.0. I created just a root partion (/dev/sda1)

I installed lilo.

/etc/lilo.conf file:
----------------------------------------------------
boot=/dev/sda
prompt
timeout=50
default=gentoo
image=/boot/kernel-2.6.11-gentoo-r3
label=gentoo
read-only
root=/dev/sda1
----------------------------------------------------

/etc/fstab
------------------------------------------------------
/dev/sda1 / ext3 noatime 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
-------------------------------------------------------

On boot I have a kernel panic and this message apears

VFS: cannot open device "801" or unknown-bloc (8,1)
Please append a correct "root"= boot option.
kernel panic not syncing:VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown-bloc (8,1).

Could it be that your kernel needs scsi support built in

Yup, the kernel needs the the scsi driver.
On the other hand I seem to remember using scsi for virtual disks being a problem. You could try creating an ide virtual disk instead.

By default, VMware virtual machines provide a BusLogic SCSI controller and a SCSI hard drive. Your new kernel should have these device drivers for them:

Device Drivers --->
SCSI device support --->
<*> SCSI device support
<*> SCSI disk support
SCSI low-level drivers --->
<*> BusLogic SCSI support

I built a new kernet and I reboot. The folowing message apears just on beginiig of boot:

ran out of input data
-- system halted

Did you run the lilo command after you re-compiled your kernel? Seems like that was the problem in this thread

Thank you! Had exactly the same problem, but now it works fine. Brilliant, guys!

BTW, the should actually add this type of problem in the handbook as a note or something. It's critical to make the system even work, and there's more people out there with BusLogic/SCSI-drives. Just a thought..
