You do not want to mess with the installer trust me. It has many problems.

Which is exactly why people need to try it and find the problems and submit bug reports. I already have gentoo installed and working fine. I am going to try the installer cd in vmware and try to find problems with it.

Thanks for the quick response. What is the name of the file. I see an iso called dolphin-i686-2005.0-r2.iso and another called livecd-x86-2005.1.iso. Which one is it?

The name is: livecd-x86-2005.1.iso

You can find a fast mirror here: ftp://ftp.du.se/pub/os/gentoo

BUT, DON'T PLAY TOO MUCH WITH IT, IT'S KNOWN TO KILL PARTITION LIKE SMASHING BREADCRUMBS WITH A LARGE HAMMER!

Sorry to bump up an old topic but the initial topic of this post still really hasn't been answered: has anyone been able to complete a successful install using the graphical installer? I must have tried 10 different ways (several time just permitting the installer to rape my MBR and partition tables for the fun of it), at one point getting past the partitioning, unpacking, and building only to receive an error when syncing. Plus the one thing I don't like about the installer is the confusion when graphically configuring make.conf. It took me about 5 failed installs to realize that using the dropdown menu for architecture and desired optimization level meant you didn't have to enter "-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" in the custom text box. Or maybe I'm just too stupid to realize something obvious  . Oh well.

Still, the LiveCD does have one plus -- with the official 2005.1 CD ALSA can't load the proper drivers for my on-board nForce2 soundcard, but in the LiveCD it can. However, I haven't quite figured out whether this is because the LiveCD contains more drivers or because the official Minimal Install CD contains less  .

If someone does get the graphical install to work please post the installprofile.xml you used so everyone can test it. Thanks!

I got the graphical installer to work on mine. I did not choose any packages, nor did I customize anything like the make.conf stuff, etc. Basically just let it do as naked a build with as little customizations as possible -- also could never get anything but using the webrsync method to work. Upon reboot after being built successfully I had to vi my inittab. For some reason all the console settings were at the bottom of the file after it ends. I deleted all of the lines at the bottom and just uncommented the same lines up higher (that were for some reason commented out). Whallah -- reboot again and I'm all good. Now I am going to tweak my make.conf and my kernel and re-build everything with an 'emerge -e world'.

GLI testers, do these to maximise your chances of a successful install:

  1. MOST IMPORTANTLY: update the installer to the latest CVS version before proceeding! A number of bugs have been fixed in the CVS version.

For convenience sake, here's the steps to update the GLI on the X CD (taken from the official GLI FAQ):
    Code:
    (open a terminal and then...)
    # xhost +
    # sudo su -
    # /opt/installer/misc/getgli
    # export DISPLAY=:0.0
    # cd installer/src/fe/gtk
    # ./gtkfe.py

  2. Always use emerge-webrsync for the Portage sync method, even if you are not behind a rsync-filtering proxy. emerge --sync is known to fail. This is a problem with Portage and not the installer itself. (See bug 102115, comment 3.)

If there are problems:

  • Please search in Gentoo bugzilla for a bug that describes your problem, and add your "me too" comment to it.
  • Otherwise, file a new bug in the "Gentoo Linux  GLI" category.
  • For filing a new bug, be sure to attach /var/log/installer.log and /tmp/installprofile.xml as attachments to the bug. Do not type them into the bug description itself.

Rather go "emerge qemu". It is in portage, and doesn't want you to pay a lot of money just to get commercial crap for windows ported to linux (as in the case with VMWare ...) ;)

One of the more usefull options would be to create automated installers. Newbies should stick to manual install, or else they wouldn't learn enough about linux to even maintain it, and would quickly run bak to windows. But, anyway, I like the new graphical installer :D

YAY! YAY! YAY! :D :D :D :D :D

Success at last - installation on a real machine (no VMware / qemu slowness for me, thanks) - with the latest snapshot (downloaded 20050816).

Specs:

  • Pentium 4 1.7 ghz
  • 40 GB PATA HDD
  • 1 GB RAM

installprofile.xml will be posted here on request.

Now rebooting to test the new install out...

EDIT: First reboot unsuccessful.

It turns out that /etc/inittab in the new install got copied over from the CD! Apparently, I got too much when I chose to "Dynamic install" a quickpkg of the CD's packages on my system. Now, that would be prefectly nice, if not for the fact that these lines are at the end of the CD's (and hence the new install's) inittab:
Code:

c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty1 linux
c2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty2 linux
c3:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty3 linux
c4:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty4 linux
c5:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -nl /bin/bashlogin 38400 tty6 linux

... and you guessed it, /bin/bashlogin does not exist in the newly installed system. Grr...

(In case you're wondering what /bin/bashlogin is, it's a script that displays the "Welcome to Gentoo Linux" MOTD when you boot into the LiveCD.)

The fix is to reboot with the CD, mount partitions and swap, chroot and then:

  1. comment out the above-mentioned lines - the last 6 lines - in /etc/inittab
  2. Look for this block not too far down from the start of the file (first line is line 31):
    Code:

    #c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
    #c2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
    #c3:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
    #c4:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
    #c5:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
    #c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

  3. Remove the "#" from the start of all of these lines.
  4. Save the changes and reboot.

EDIT 2: I realise I've been repeating what kiosk said in this post, but he is not as clear. And I've managed to find out exactly why inittab got mangled. 8)

2nd reboot. I find the following displaying before the login prompt:
Code:

-----------------------------------------------------
Your system seems to be missing critical device files
in /dev !  Although you may be running udev or devfs,
the root partition is missing these required files !

To rectify this situation, please do the following:
mkdir /mnt/fixit
mount --bind / /mnt/fixit
cp -a /dev/* /mnt/fixit/dev/
umount /mnt/fixit
rmdir /mnt/fixit

You may refer to these instructions at /etc/issue.
If you previously had an issue file, it has been
backed up at /etc/issue.devfix.

Thanks for using Gentoo ! :)
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40987
----------------------------------------------------

I've just run the commands mentioned, now rebooting again...

EDIT 3: Finally, fixed on 3rd reboot.

emerge --oneshot baselayout fixed the /dev problem.

well i have tried to install it also many times
but never succeeded

the installer didn't get further from mounting
when i looked at /var/log/installer.log then i saw
that there was a problem with device nodes

i got this error when the installer stopped when mounting swap
GLI: August 15 2005 11:43:25 - Waiting for device node /dev/hda3.03125 to exist...

and all the other times i tried to install it stopped at mounting another ext2 partition
GLI: August 15 2005 16:00:54 - Waiting for device node /dev/hda4.03125 to exist$

ofcourse the first time i tried to install i destroyed my partitions, but managed to get all back
with gpart(:P )

As kimchi_sg already pointed out, the installer is alpha and bug reports are welcome. See http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/releng/installer/faq.xml#foundbug

OK the py file blowing up is new code:

diff /mnt/gentoo/installer/src/GLIUtility.py /opt/installer/GLIUtility.py|less

Shows differences lines 701,731 to the code on the livecd.

Not knowing py, the line in error looks wrong (i think)

return exitsuccess(ret):

?? Syntax should the : be there ??

Of course an obvious question is where are the nice curly braces {}

No, no... Do the upgrade steps right after booting up the CD and changing the root and user gentoo's passwords(*). Do not do anything else to python or the GLI code, and you will be okay!

I have done the same sequence of commands 4 times over, they are all-sufficient for ensuring an updated copy of the GLI for testing.

(*) - If you use a HTTP proxy, you will need to export http_proxy in the terminal window prior to typing in the commands, of course. Or the getgli script will fail to download the file.

Here it is.

Important note 1: But since it is highly improbable that 2 randomly chosen Gentoo installations are exactly the same in terms of software installed, make.conf, etc, I highly recommend you to deviate from this installprofile.xml of mine. Do your normal style of install, and see the resu;ts! If anything breaks, file a bug as usual. The installer must be able to process any and all combinations of (partitioning, make.conf, cron daemon, etc) choices before it is considered for release.

Important note 2:Please, please upgrade the installer to the latest CVS version, using the steps found here, before proceeding to try an install.

How do you get the installer? I just downloaded the 2005.1 release and it booted to the command line. How do I start the GUI installer?

You must download the experimental X liveCD, which is in the /experimental/x86/livecd/x86/ directory of all Gentoo mirrors. The filename is livecd-x86-2005.1.iso .

Please make sure that the ISO is not corrupted before using it. Download the .md5 file for the ISO, and verify it with md5sum. The correct checksum for the ISO is easy to remember and notice, as it begins with "dad".

Thanks kimchi_sg you got me a bit further and more knowledgeable.

Did that (loaded installer, ran, saved installer.xml). Got this:

Code:

Exception received:

Please submit a bug report (after searching to make sure it's not a known issue and verifying you didn't do something stupid) with the contents of /var/log/install.log and /tmp/installprofile.xml

This was on the console:

Code:

./gtkfe.py

outside here3

interesting?

What are you trying to do?

For the record, the X CD is not the GUI equivalent of the Universal CD. There are no Portage snapshots or stage 3 tarballs on it. Do not bother looking for them.

If you want to do a networkless install with the GLI, you will have to select Stage 3 with the GRP and "dynamic install" (generate and install packages based on those of the CDROM) options. Also, for Portage tree sync method, only the "emerge-webrsync" option works, for now. Both "emerge --sync" and "snapshot" do not work.

I am trying to use the livecd with the GLI to install gentoo.

I followed your advice thinking that you had the same CD as me.

It sounds like you are telling me otherwise. Although that an X CD is I am not sure.

>Do not bother looking for them.

I didn't the installer did.

I think that the option I selected incorrectly was

<dynamic-stage3>
False
</dynamic-stage3>

Should be true. I will try this.

Code:

<?xml version="1.0" ?>
<gli-profile>
        <kernel-build-method>
                genkernel
        </kernel-build-method>

just because you have never had any problems doesnt mean they dont exist.
I ahve never got a computer virus on my system, does that mean they dont exist

and yes there are problems with ReisterFS with reliablity - have a search. Ext2/3 is the must robust be it (slightly) slower then Reister.
BUT is such a minor speed difference so important for home use of data integraty?

Considering I've had more trouble with ntfs than I have reiser4, yes, the speed difference (which can be in excess of 100%) is worth it. Considering it's getting close to stabilization, it's doing good.

The new installer is beautiful, but it has 2 serious problems:
1. It does not work.
2. It destroys partition tables.
