I am using alcohol 120 - will it burn the exact iso file on the cd?
and how will windows boot from it if its a ISO?
maybe you are trying to say that linux could recognize ISO and get data from it automatically? no? |

burn the ISO, and then put it in your PC and reboot. You may need to change some BIOS settings to make your machine boot off a CD, but Linux installation takes place COMPLETLY outside of Windows...
windows... has NOTHING to do with a linux installation
good luck _________________ I am a linux n00b!! |

nop not saying that either.
think of an ISO file as the data stream of the CD, it is an exact copy of it.
ie if you did
Code: |
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=~/cd.iso
|
that would create a ISO in linux/BSD/UNIX/...
now the thing is to use this file it needs to be on a CD, so it needs to be "burnt" to a CDROM.
IF "dd" worked on CDR (with kernel help) you could just do
Code: |
dd if=~/cd.iso of=/dev/cdr
|
unfortunetly you cannot, so it must be burnt to a disk and then it is just like a regular CD.
Now you can just pop it into yr CDROM and reboot your PC and as long as BIOS set to boot of CDROM it will boot the CD.
WHat I was talking abt is if you wanted to just browse the CDROM you can either burn hte ISO to a CDROM and browse the CD that way, or you can use a piece of software to trea the ISO image as a new drive to browse it that way _________________

you guys are funny
I am a FreeBSD 4.11 administrator. I never used iso before. Thanks for the comments about not being ready but my mom told me i am ready for Linux.
So - ISO files is something I actually never worked with before.
I downloaded Alcohol 120% and will see how that works on my windows machine.
And just as a reminder:
I want to install Gentoo on this windows laptop |
I think he can handle Gentoo, read the whole post before replying _________________
