|
|
a few guys here at work have setup proxies on their home network. one said he has a cgi proxy that runs with apache or some such that he uses just to access the websites that're blocked by our proxy here at the office. not things like porn, per se, but things like hotmail (or any webmail) and certain webcomics that we frequent.
however, this knowledge at the office is extremely top secret. no one wants to share it for fear of punishment, so i was wondering if anyone here could give me a brief article on what a proxy is, what it does, and how i can set one up myself from behind another proxy (ms proxy 2.0 - yeah, we're ancient).
thanks!

This is the quick and dirty on what they're doing and how you can do the same.
1. Setup a server, I assume Gentoo in this case.
2. Install squid.
a. Set Squid to no cache, it will make you life easier
b. Set Squid to allow access from the public IP space you use at work.
c. Set Squid up on a port, default is 3128, but they may filter that at work. You may need to do some testing or ask someone in the know.
d. Make sure the server allows connections on the port you picked, ie reconfig you firewall.
3. Change your browser settings
a. enter the IP and port your proxy is running on.
When you open a webpage in your browser it should contact your proxy server on the port you specified. The proxy server will make the connections to the web servers for you. This keeps the local proxy server which hijacks any port 80 connection and filters, caches, etc from interfering with your browsing.
