I've been using alsa driver without ANY problem until two days ago.

I use via82xx driver. [I simply do alsaconf and that has been working really well]

Recently I've switched to KDE. [and I love it]

And two days ago a message came up upon KDE start up. It said something about sound server not working correctly.

So I thought it was a temporary problem and reloaded alsa driver by doing "/etc/init.d/alsasound restart" and then I restarted arts sound system, and it did solve the problem.

But when I rebooted, the same problem came up and I had to do the same thing to get sound out of my computer.
[I tried alsamixer and it seemed to be working well. There was no error message during the boot]

So I thought I should reemerge the alsa stuff and I did, which resulted in another weird situation.

Now when I reboot, and do alsamixer, it gives me something like camera, usb (can't even remember) and just one volume control that cannot be adjusted.

So now I have to do alsaconf + alsasound restart + arts restart.

What might be the problem??

PS. weird thing is that it doesn't give me ANY error message now, and it doesn't work....

After posting this question, the "usb camera" reminded me of the web cam that I recently plugged in.

And wow I unpluged it and rebooted; now everything works fine.
[maybe because that webcam had a microphone on it.]

Hmm is there anyway to get this webcam thing working on gentoo?

And I really want to know if there is a way to prevent my system from recognizing my webcam as my sound device :?

guessing

the camer with the sound stuff might have taken the default sound path ? like /dev/mixer

and the sound card getting bumped to the next path like like /dev/mixer1 ?

try plugging in the camera after the sound works and se what happens
