Apparently I have an old version from back in the day of Mesa3d libraries installed (without the ebuild). I'm trying to have direct hardware rendering with my nvidia ti4600. I've emerge nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx, disabled "dri", enabled "glx" switched from "nv" to "nvidia" in xorg.conf, and did an opengl-update nvidia. BUT MESA still pops up in glxinfo!!!!

Code:
athlonxp env.d # glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: Brian Paul
server glx version string: 1.4 Mesa 6.2.1
server glx extensions:
    GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer, GLX_MESA_pixmap_colormap,

I tried using the make files that came with the Mesa libraries, but there is no "remove" or "uninstall" section.

For my games like UT2004 and doom3, I have to run LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so ut2004 to get the hardware rendering. I've made scripts for this to ease the process. But now I realize I can't do that with programs like xscreensaver and e17 (hardware rendering).

Is there anyway I can fix this without having to format my drive!

Thanks!

I emailed vapier@gentoo.org (mike) and he gave me a working solution

locate all of the following files:
libGL.so*
libGL.la
libGLcore.so*
libglx.so
gl.h
glx.h
glext.h
glxext.h

and then figure out which ones are installed by portage and which ones
arent ... to do that, you can use `qfile` from the portage-utils package

then i'd delete everything that isnt owned by a package in portage and re-run
opengl-update ...
