proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/* not being updated

I have an odd thing going on with my HP zd7800 series laptop. None of the files under /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1 get updated after the first time they are written, so my battery appears to be not being drained, right up until it runs out of power. I am pretty sure this worked correctly once in the past, but that was before I was interested in using this data.

Any ideas for what to check?
