I am somewhat new to Gentoo and I get the following strange error when I attempt to open an xterm window:
xterm: Error 32, errno 2: No such file or directory
Reason: get_pty: not enough ptys
Does anybody have any ideas why I might be getting this error? I may have messed something up in the setup process.. not so sure what I'm doing. So I would be happy to try whatever suggestions you might have.
Thanks again.. |

Can you give a little more info? What kernel version are you using (run uname -r)? Are you using udev or devfs? Has this worked before? Have you recently recompiled your kernel? Have you been playing with udev rules or anything? |

thanks jk3us...
kernel version is 2.6.11-gentoo-r11
Although I don't know much about devfs and udev and how exactly they work.. I believe I am using udev since "ps aux | grep dev" returned a process called udevd. I'm assuming this is the default when installing from stage3 since I don't remember ever actually specifying this..
It did work before! And I don't believe i recently recompiled my kernel or played with udev rules.. I emerged things over time but that is about all the activity I have personally done (I think) since this problem started..
thanks again.. |

jk3us,
thanks for the tips.. i use dispatch-conf rather than etc-update. So I tried running dispatch-conf followed by udevstart which did not solve the problem and also rebooting did not solve the problem.
another weird thing i should report.. running udevstart changes the permissions on my /dev/null file to crw-rw---- everytime i run it.. shouldnt this file generally be crw-rw-rw-??
also, if anyone has any other ideas.. it would be much appreciated as being unable to run xterm is quite a hindrance!
thanks in advance..

I actually don't remember, but I followed another post which I cannot find anymore. It was something like deleting some group of files and re-emerging udev and rebooting... anyway try the latter two..
