|
|
I recently installed gentoo 64 on my computer. The stats are AMD 3500 processor, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and other stuff. I was having trouble getting Xorg to work, but I eventually got it up and running. Furthermore, I was able to get fluxbox running. However, one error, that although it does not inhibit me using fluxbox, is something I want to get resolved. After exiting X, the following error is shown:
X Window System Version 6.8.2

I am not sure what other information may be needed because I am not sure what the problem actually is. Since I can still run fluxbox, I do not think the problem can be that serious, but just in case, I want to fix it. Any help would be very welcome. _________________ Valar Morghulis

I wish I could help, but I am getting the same error. I did the x86 build, but otherwise my system is the same as yours.
I tried emerging the ati drivers and then configuring xsrever for them, but it didn't work. If I run startx for a user that is part of the video group, I just get an error. |

I have actually searched the forum, and I have read pages of posts about ati/amd64 problems, but nothing exactly like my problem. Because I am new to linux, I do not want to go around messing up everything. Any help you can give I would be apreciative. _________________ Valar Morghulis |

Although I was tempted to go out and buy an nvidia card, I realized that I would have to BUY another card. Therefore, I am going to try fix what I have, since I am cheap. Thanks for the information on the ati/gentoo website, but I am still having trouble installing the ati drivers. They are not installing correctly, and the error is still the same as before (pasted below). What could be causing this?

Maybe you should try another kernel version? I tried to compile it against 2.6.12 and it was a no go.
Highest kernel version i used with fglrx was 2.6.11-gentoo-r6. _________________

Intresting. I will try that. The only other thing I can think of trying is an earlier version of xorg. I think the fact that I am running an amd64 is what is causing me more problems than normal. Thanks for the suggestion. I will let you know how it works out. _________________ Valar Morghulis |

Just make sure you install the 64bit drivers from ati. What version are you trying to install? _________________

My system is almost similar to yours: AMD64 3400+ and Ati Radeon 9800 pro SE.
I got my card and X (KDE) running by following this link

I think I may have solved the problem. Just wait...
And it works. All I had to do was reinstall linux with the appropriate drivers to make sure there were no reminants of the ati-drivers downloaded from ati.com, and then emerge the ati-drivers after unmasking them. I can now successfully start x. _________________ Valar Morghulis |
