well i got a problem with the nvidia thing. I am using an amd 64 so i followed the steps in the gentoo wiki...howto and was able to emerge everything but as soon as i change the xorg.conf the X does not run. it says that it is due (WW)Nvidtidfada: Chipset. So i type opengl-update and it works but the X does not run. i am not sure what to do now.

the thing is the following. I have a NVIDIA Geforce 5700 FX LE video card. so i want to use all of its features and having it enabled with opengl. however i was not able to do so with nv, i tried nvidia and doesnt work. can you guys tell me what to do? or what to check?

Is hotpluggable devices support enabled in your kernel? You need that.

I would put these lines in with your nvidia section:

Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "NvAGP" "3"

And check for what avieth said.

it still does not work. i enabled most of the hot plug features...and also i typed nvidia into the modules.autoload.d but still does nto work. if i type "insmod nvidia" it says it cannot find it. i am lost...i am using AMD64 (did i mention this before?) ..typing in lynx

so i go to the kernel once again after reading somewhere else that the hotplug i needed to enable was in general setup (i was just enabling the firmware devices before x_x) however when i try to press "Support for hot-pluggable devices" i can not. so i go to help and it says it depends on !Arch_S390..any ideas?

so i went into .config to see if Config_hotplug was enabled or not. according to .config it is...however i am not sure. right now how can i tell if it is or not. when i type lsmod nvidia appears...and now nvidia also appears in the boot up as a module...but the X still does not start for the same reason

Did anyone else with this problem just emerge the nvidia drivers?
I installed kernel 2.6.12-r6 and nvidia drivers still worked but after i emerged nvidia-settings, X was broken.

If unresolved symbols are reported, then
the kernel module was most likely built against a Linux kernel source tree
(or kernel headers) for a kernel revision or configuration that doesn't
match the running kernel.

this is what it says in the nvidia page. i am using 2.6.11-r3 btw.

guys come on...some help to this peruvian dude. right now i am trapped in the windows world (which by the way sucks) just because of this driver problem...anyone any ideas??? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:cry:

right now i am emerging gentoo-sources to see if it can help at all. however i found on the nvidia page a linux driver so i download and try to install...what do i get...a message saying "nvidia driver has been installed already" however, so i type lsmod and it says that nvidia is a permanent MODULE!!! WTF!! what has happened? i am downloading the new kernel...and please tell me what to disable so the module is not permanent. i did genkernel to install.

The Options in the video card settings are completely optional. Mine give me accelerated graphics while composite is enabled, and a cursor shadow.

The Option at the bottom enables composite for transparency/shadows.

This xorg.conf is for:

AMD Opteron 146
ASUS SK8N
XFX Geforce 6600 GT
512 MB pc2700
NForce 3 Chipset.

Hi aproan.

Check your kernel config if any nvidia framebuffer is enabled or compiled in
to the kernel.

cat /usr/src/linux/.config |grep CONFIG_FB_NVIDIA


If it is set then reconfigure your kernel. The nvidia_fb and the nvidia-kernel
don't work together.

P.S. You can do

cat /usr/src/linux/.config |grep CONFIG_FB_

to see all settings of fb devices in the kernel.

well i am going to read and check over the xorg you gave me. i tried with the site's driver and it kept conflicting with the opengl of xorg. well i now i have kernel 2.6.12-r6 nvidias frame buffer is disabled. whoever vesa's is enabled. does it matter if my computer is amd64, perhaps nvidia is just for 32bits

SOLVED!! i did it well really i had to go to the nvidia page and downloaded their installer. first i unmerged nvidia.kernel and nvidia-glx...however it works...but every time i boot up my X-Windows is moved a bit to the left. how can i solve this?
