First i didn't know where to put this because it's part of almost all the threads. I have tons of problems right now. I installed Gentoo using vidalinux 1.2  and it works without a problem. I did the deep system updating etc. My problem is I don't get sound when i play a file in REAL player or Mplayer. I am running AMD 64 3000+ and i have the mplayer32 bin thing and i see video just dont have sound. My Gentoo machine is also running very slow. I installed drivers but even that doesn't help. I ran glxgears and the gears are very slow. What can i do to make my PC run faster? Is it safe to make a new kernel. Please Help.

Just a little tip: post different problems on different threads :)

First thing here is to check it's not muted, run 'alsamixer', and also you must have the proper CMOS settings

There are a lot of things you can do, just search, i will tell you one thing though, you can follow this nice guide:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/prelink-howto.xml , this should speed things up a little.

If you followed those steps, your bzimage is already in the /boot partition (along with your System.map and .config file). Assuming that they are, you just need to add an entry to your grub.conf file (or lilo.conf file if you're using lilo). Make it the same as your current entry, but point it towards the newer kernel name and change the title to whatever you want (also, I think you need to run "lilo" if you're using lilo. I've always used grub, though, so I'm not positive). After that, you just need to reboot and select the new entry from your bootloader menu and (hopefully) it will boot you into the new kernel.

In all honesty, I've never used vidalinux, but I just ran through the screenshots of on the website, and it looks like Grub is the default bootloader, so I'll assume you're using that :F. First, you need to copy the bzImage to the /boot partition like so (from the directory in /usr/src for your new kernel sources):
Code:

cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.#.##-ck-r#
cp System.map /boot/System-2.#.##-ck-r#
cp .config /boot/config-2.#.##-ck-r#

and replace and #s with the correct version numbers for what you dowloaded/compiled.

Now, when you said that there was just the vidalinux 1 on the /boot partition, did you mean that there is one folder called "vidalinux 1"? If so, a few more questions:

Is your /boot partition actually mounted (actually, make sure it's mounted before copying over the above files)
What's in this vidalinux folder? (Can you post the output of "ls -l /boot/vidalinux\ 1/?)

If you can, try to find a file called "grub.conf" or "menu.lst". On a Gentoo install, menu.lst is a link to grub.conf, but I don't know how vidalinux sets it up. In either case, the file with text in it will be the one that controls what menu options you have directly after you boot your computer. What you'll want to do is add an entry that looks something like this:
Code:

title=Gentoo Ck Kernel
root (hd0,0)
kernel /kernel-2.#.##-ck-r# root=/dev/hda3 vga=normal

again, with the #s matching the versions of your kernel (more importantly, matching what you named your kernel earlier).

If there really isn't anything on the /boot partition besides that folder, or it's not set up how I'm thinking it is, I don't know how much help I can be, since I've never done a vidalinux install. I'll do what I can, though. Good luck.
