For the Audigy 1 you don't *need* the cvs drivers but theres no harm in using them if you know how.

My eBuild sets up all 6 Channels properly, if you set Xine to use 5.1 channels, you will get 5.1 channels through the 3 jacks on your card, similarly for 4.0.

I use XMMS to play all my music and I get output through all 6 channels by default.

I found MPlayer gives the same number of channel output as the source. ie. Dolb Digital 5.1 will give you all 6 channels and a stereo Mp3 will only output to the front 2 speakers.

To change your volumes run: aumix

If you don't have aumix installed just: emerge aumix

As it states on my webpage:

vol: Front Volume
ogain: Rear Volume
line1: Sub/Center Volume
pcm: Controls volume for all 6 speakers

nice to hear audigy is working nicely....
... I'm planning new audio system for my pc, going to buy the inspire 5500. Mainly couse I think it is a good price for a nice set (unless someone says to me 5700 is much much much better). Only for the card I'm not sure jet audigy1 player or the audigy2 player, money ain't the thing but more the driver support.

So my question is audigy 1 or 2, both easy to get them fully working with all there hardware support ? and is the audigy2 much betetr value over audigy1 discounting the 6.1 support....

Tuff call ;) Audigy would be great value but i bet it has a bitchin prove tag. But Gentoo will surely be able to run either.

Good Luck

well going to buy audigy2, now I'm still looking for some nice speakers. I was thinking of the inspiration 5500 but not sure if I can adjust the subwoofer, I have really bad experience with creative woofer, once had a little set a3.1 or something it was 2 sateltes one woofer, the woofer produced so much bass way to much. Course bass makes the sound in dolby sets, but I like to be able to fully adjust it. Over here there is no way to just listen to the set somewhere, with hifi/audio sets it is pretty normal but with pc sets it is not happening here, but this will probably the same in other country's.

Why not just use Aumix to adjust the bass level, it's got a nice clean GUI, very easy to use.

I heard many good things about aumix so I connected the a3.1 (imo woofer) turned woofer volume half (on woofer) emerged aumix, started shaggy sexy lady (imo bass) started aumix but the only way I c to turn bass off is turning sound level off.

With aumix u can do every in/output line volume and balance, would be nice of soemone could tell me inspirion 5.1 5500 runs the subwoofer with seperated line on the audigy2........

I just have sound support built into my kernel and 2 modules loaded: emu10k1 and ac97_codec but haveing soundcore is fine too.

Don't bother with ESD because its crap.

The only thing you need to do other than have the modules loaded is add yourself to the audio group but if you haven't touched your kernel and it worked before then I don't know what you've done.

how do you get xmms use the 6 channels?
I tried with both the jack in analog and digital output, if I don't mirror the front ouput to the rear output, I don't have any sound playing from the rear nor the center speakers....

I would really prefer to use the digital output of the card....

if this can help....my card is an audigy platinium and speakers anre Megaworks 510D

thx

I got xmms to use 6 channels by emerging my emu10k1-audigy ebuild and using vanilla 2.4.19/20 kernel. I found for some unexplainable reason that using a heavily patched vanilla kernel only gave sound out the front 2 speakers and the sound was clipping if you listened very carefully.

"The only thing you need to do other than have the modules loaded is add yourself to the audio group but if you haven't touched your kernel and it worked before then I don't know what you've done"

This might be the problem, because If I removes the relevant sound drivers from modules.autoload, then manually modprobe them, my sound works fine, but if i try and autoload it...it dont work.

So based on your advise..do u think adding myself to the audigy group would work (sorry..im quite a newbie). If so how do i add myself as a user of audigy.

I really..really appreciate your help.

very best regards,
casper

there isn't an audigy group, but there's a audio group....
You can add yourself there by editing the /etc/group file

sorry, no more ideas.

I just installed Gentoo on a friends machine and he has an audigy. I just had sound support in the kernel and emerged my emu10k1-audigy ebuild and xmms-1.2.7 and sound came out of all 6 speakers.

You have to run audigy-script to setup the cards routing. You can check volume levels with aumix, Line1 is the rear volume.

To check that sound comes out of the rear at all try playing anything with Xine set to 4.0 sound.

Everything seems to be working, but I have no idea why my back 2 speakers don't work, no sound but instead a high pitch noise that hurts my ears. I use an Audigy mp3 with 4 speakers and a sub. If it is making a high pitch whining noise, it is finding the speakers, but not giving any logical input. Any ideas??
