I actually gave up the install because I was afraid the fan was going to die!

Just came across this thread. Gentoo is still my favorite install for my desktop. Most software I want to try out is one command away. And most problems I come across can be solved with a quick search on this forum :D

I use Gentoo. I have a windows partition only for things that I haven't been successful at doing in linux (reads: sync iphone).

I just feel like I can't do anything in Windows. Even other linux distros seem really dumbed down these days. There is no question for me, Gentoo gives me the control I need over my system.

1. AMD X2 4200+ runs KDE4 and Xfce4.6

2. Acer aspire laptop Turion64 runs KDE4 and Xfce4.6

3. AMD Athlon mobile 2600+ barton on desktop M/B runs KDE4 and Xfce4.6 Http-replicator and rsync mirror for others. Also set up in dual seat mode, one user is freevo media centre streams dvds music recorded TV etc over a wireless AV transmitter/reciever setup. The other seat is availble for regular users.

4. Acer Aspire One Intel Atom runs just Xfce4.6 (for now)

If it dont run on Gentoo then I can do without it!

For development and HPC it's all Gentoo if I can help it.... but most of the time in large businesses Redhat and SuSE get the iron because they have "certification" processes in place that make CEO's all warm and tingly inside. Because of that and the fact that I has born and raised in Raleigh, where Redhat HQ is you'll catch me sporting Fedora from time to time.

I'm currently still using Gentoo on a dual socket P-III machine (2x1000MHz) w/ hitchhiker-sources, reiser4 and KDE4, and I guess I cannot have anything faster on that hardware. Gentoo's great!

Gentoo in all desktops and laptops, FreeBSD in router.
Last time I successfully booted into Windows was 2002. I had a Windows partition until 2003, tried to boot to play a Windows game for a change but got BSOD. Recovered HDD space for normal use. I do have a subdued Windows in VirtualBox, network disabled. IMO no Windows computer should be connected to the internet. The whole idea to protect Windows from evilware by blacklisting known threats does not pass common sense test. Does not pass reality test either. In fact, blackhats selling Windows breaching software give six months warranty, regardless what "security software" or browser is used, infection is guaranteed. No comments needed.

Locked for reaching the 30-page mark (only took four years ).

As the voting has been affirmative by an overwhelming margin I see no need to create a continuation poll.
