Ok I put aac in my use flags but for some reasom it is not recognised by mplayer.
Code: | # emerge -pv mplayer
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre6-r4 -3dfx -3dnow -3dnowext +X +aalib +alsa (-altivec) -arts +avi -bidi -cdparanoia +debug -dga -directfb +divx4linux -doc -dts -dv -dvb -dvd -dvdread -edl +encode -esd -fbcon -ggi +gif +gtk +i8x0 -ipv6 -jack -joystick +jpeg -libcaca -lirc +live -lzo +mad -matroska -matrox +mmx -mmxext +mpeg -mythtv +nas +nls +nvidia +oggvorbis +opengl +oss +png +real -rtc -samba +sdl +sse +sse2 -svga -tga -theora +truetype -v4l -v4l2 -xanim -xinerama +xmms +xv +xvid -xvmc 7,137 kB |
Has the aac use flag been depreciated or could there be something else blocking it? _________________ Occupation: Professional Slacker

Maybe mplayer now has aac support natively and one does not have to specify it. At least the use flag still exists here. |

mplayer apparently has an internal copy of faad (the aac library). Looking at the ebuild, the 'mpeg' use flag dictates whether the internal version is used (mpeg unset) or whether an external copy elsewhere on the system is used (mpeg set).
Either way, it will play aac. _________________ They don't have a good bathroom to do coke in. |

Mine won't. I'm using mplayer-1.0_pre6-r4 (the latest stable version I think). I am able to play aac but I only get sound from the right speaker, the left channel remains silent. Mplayer doesn't display any error message, though. |

Maybe a dumb question, but are you sure the video has sound on both channels? |

According to gentoo-portage.com the aac use flag is appreciated (?) back from version 1.0_pre6-r6. Besides, mplayer seems to have some trouble with aac, at least in .mp4 files as you can read here.

Yes, it plays fine in xine, except for the fact that video and audio get severely out of sync after some time. I had to reencode the audio to vorbis and it worked fine. |

If you want, you can try updating to an ~x86 version of faad2, and making sure mplayer uses the external library (set the mpeg use flag, as I said above). The newer revisions in portage contain a few patches that may or may not make a difference (it at least contains a patch that makes faad work on amd64, but it probably contains others). You may have to recompile mplayer after faad2, as well. _________________ They don't have a good bathroom to do coke in. |

Well it seems to work for some people and not for others, would it help if I downgraded to an earlier version of mplayer? _________________ Occupation: Professional Slacker

Maybe upgrade, my mplayer-1.0_pre7 does have the aac use flag again but doesn't have the mpeg useflag. |

Well thats pretty messed up, they add features and remove others, well will I have to do some hacking to get the latest, or just simply make an /etc/portage/package.keywords file? And is it worth it to use software from the unstable branch? _________________ Occupation: Professional Slacker

Code: | echo media-video/mplayer ~x86 >> /etc/portage/package.keywords |
For some packages it is worth using the unstable branch, eg. for amd64 there hasn't been a 64bit stable xvid codec and the 32bit was very slow.
Also for the nvidia drivers, I think it is worth.
I have altogether about 15 unstable packages installed. |
