ok guys, this one is really strange.

for some reason, im unable to access blogger.com with firefox 1.06. i can view the entire source of any blogger.com page, but firefox never actually renders the content. at first, i thought it must be an issue with one of the firefox extensions, but im still seeing the same behavior with no extensions installed.

is anyone else having this problem? im baffled.

Hi all -- a gentoo noob here with some details on this crash. Blogger.com crashes for me too, and I've found some other pages that give the same result.
I am using mozilla-firefox-bin 1.0.6-r2...

Trying to load any of these pages give the same result: (FF immediately crashes, doesn't even start to render, all FF windows close)

http://blogger.com/
http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/0803/p13s02-lifo.html
http://www.csmonitor.com/

All of these pages work with no problems in Konqueror on the same box, and in FF 1.0.6 on Win2K.

Following a useful tip in another thread, I ran FF from a shell so I could see the error messages on exit, and got the following:
Code:

gngentoo program # firefox
No running windows found
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 116:  4095 Segmentation fault      "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)
gngentoo program # firefox
No running windows found
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 116:  4118 Segmentation fault      "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)
gngentoo program # firefox
No running windows found
/usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 116:  4141 Segmentation fault      "$mozbin" "$@"
firefox-bin exited with non-zero status (139)
gngentoo program #

The only plugin I am currently running is Java.

Can somebody else try these pages and see if they give the same results in 1.0.6? I can submit the bug but first wanted to see if there were any others that had the problem.

I will stay on this and reply to this thread with any progress or resolutions.

Thanks!

The three sites worked ok here too, running Firefox-1.06-r4

The blogger.com site is useing 3 javascripts while the other csmonitor.com seems to use 12-17 depending on which page I'm looking at. Perhaps these scripts are calling some functions that are crashing Firefox (like flash-ads).

I would suggest to use the plugins adblock and Noscript and filter the scripts from the other content.

Edit: greginnj are you running Firefox as root? If so, I advise you to browse the web with a normal user account instead.

c4, you got me ... I was running as root. I was so excited once I got everything running I didn't take the time to log out and back in :)

The situation has gotten weirder -- it appears to have resolved 'by itself'. Of course I'm even less happy with that than I was with the original problem.

Here's what I know so far:

FF was failing on those sites (also on ebaumsworld.com); sometime after that, I emerged gimageview and kdemultimedia-meta (which failed halfway through).

Then, magically, the pages started working. I logged in as a user (with no FF extensions) and the pages still worked!

I unmerged gimageview and the packages that kdemultimedia-meta managed to get installed -- and the sites still worked.

I did a depclean, I uninstalled and reinstalled firefox, I deleted the .mozilla directory in my home directory -- it still works.

I then thought to do a depclean after uninstalling FF -- and found that mozilla-launcher was still installed, so I unmerged that, along with lib-compat.

Now an emerge --sync, and I'm starting from scratch installing firefox ... and it still works.

All I can think is that something in my initial install got screwed up and got fixed along the way, without me noticing it. But there's still something curious happening, since more than one person has reported problems with the blogger.com site.

Thanks for the help!

im not getting any crashes or even javascript errors. blogger's comments pages just arent loading for me. but what's really weird is if i do a 'save page as' to my desktop and do a 'file -> open' on the file, the content renders just fine.
